Arkansas-based Maverick Transportation has announced its 2024 Drivers of the Year, honoring two outstanding professionals. Justin Melvin was awarded Over-the-Road Driver of the Year, while Kenneth Thomas was named Dedicated Driver of the Year.

This annual recognition spotlights drivers who go above and beyond, exemplifying exceptional safety practices, professionalism, and integrity. Both Melvin and Thomas serve as ambassadors for the Maverick fleet, setting a high standard for the trucking community.

Celebrating Justin Melvin’s Achievements

Justin Melvin, who has served Maverick Transportation for 18 years, was recognized for his unwavering dedication to safety and his exceptional skills as a road trainer. John Coppens, Maverick’s Vice President of Operations, highlighted Melvin’s contributions, stating, “We couldn’t be prouder of Justin. He has earned the respect of his students and peers, and his vast knowledge and incredible work ethic will allow him to make a difference on our driver advisory councils.”

Melvin has accumulated an impressive 1.9 million safe driving miles and has trained 66 drivers during his time with Maverick. Commenting on his achievement, Melvin shared, “I never thought it would happen, and I am still in shock about it. I have a lot to live up to, and it will probably take a while to sink in.”

He also offered insight into his driving philosophy, referencing advice he received early in his career. “A tenured driver told me to drive my truck and secure it every day like my family was on either side of me. That made me think about how I was doing things. Everyone has to start somewhere, and I want to make sure they are trained right,” Melvin explained.

Honoring Kenneth Thomas for Excellence

Kenneth Thomas, selected as Maverick’s 2024 Dedicated Driver of the Year, has been an integral part of the company for over 13 years. Known for his integrity and reliability, Thomas has consistently delivered on time, claim-free, and with unwavering commitment.

Justin Brown, Vice President of Dedicated Operations, praised Thomas, saying, “Ken embodies the Maverick way. He has performed his job with integrity, respect, and commitment, always delivering on time and claim-free. His dedication has allowed us to grow with our customers, creating additional jobs for other drivers. Thank you, Ken. We appreciate you.”

Upon receiving the award, Thomas shared his surprise, “I was completely shocked. As I was walking back to the table, I didn’t even hear my name get called for Driver of the Year. When I realized, I was just overwhelmed with honor.” He also emphasized what sets Maverick apart, stating, “What sets Maverick apart is our attention to detail and doing everything The Maverick Way®.”

An initiative focused on connecting high school students to the trucking industry, Next Generation in Trucking (NGIT), has unveiled two exciting awards aimed at celebrating both aspiring talent and industry leaders.

Recognizing Future Trucking Professionals

NGIT has introduced the Student of the Month Award, aimed at highlighting outstanding young individuals who exhibit commitment and resilience as they work toward a career in trucking. The very first recipient of this honor is Drew, an 18-year-old student from Parke Heritage High School in Rockville, Indiana.

According to NGIT, Drew’s dedication did not go unnoticed. A national trucking company based in Kentucky discovered him after seeing his performance on Facebook during the National Truck Driving Championships. They conducted further research on his background and connected with him through their Indiana network. Their decision paid off—Drew has already secured a $75,000 job offer, marking a significant milestone in his trucking career.

Honoring Industry Leaders

The second award, the Career Catalyst Award, shines a spotlight on carriers that establish exceptional entry points into the trucking industry. Whether it’s charting career opportunities for technicians, drivers, or administrative professionals, this award recognizes the crucial role carriers play in nurturing future talent.

By launching these two awards, NGIT continues to make strides in bridging the gap between education and the trucking industry, inspiring both students and industry leaders to invest in the future of trucking.

Mack Trucks is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2025 — 125 years of shaping the transportation industry, one truck at a time. What began in a modest Brooklyn workshop has grown into a globally admired brand known for its grit, innovation, and an unrelenting Bulldog spirit.

A Journey From Local Beginnings to Global Icon

Since its inception in 1900, Mack Trucks has been the power behind the nation’s most significant achievements. From hauling steel for the iconic Brooklyn Bridge in 1909 to playing a key role in building the Hoover Dam, the company helped pave the way for America’s modern infrastructure. “For 125 years, Mack Trucks has been more than just a manufacturer – we’ve been helping to build the American success story,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks.

The Bulldog Spirit

You can’t talk about Mack Trucks without mentioning the Bulldog. The emblem earned its legacy during World War I, where Mack’s AC models were heralded by British soldiers as dependable “bulldogs” under fire. This name stuck, and in 1932, Mack’s Chief Engineer Alfred Fellows Masury sculpted the first Bulldog hood ornament from a bar of soap during a hospital stay. This enduring symbol reflects Mack Trucks’ commitment to rugged durability and reliability.

Milestones in Innovation

Over the past 125 years, Mack Trucks has established itself as a pioneer in the trucking world. Key innovations include:

1920s: Revolutionized integrated powertrains by unifying engines, transmissions, and axles for better performance.

1930s: Introduced power brakes and power-assisted steering.

1953: Launched the Thermodyne engine, setting benchmarks for power efficiency.

2010: Rolled out the mDRIVE automated manual transmission for increased productivity.

2022 and 2023: Proved sustainability is within reach by introducing the zero tailpipe-emission LR Electric refuse truck and expanding with the MD Electric medium-duty truck.

“Each of these innovations represents more than just technological advancement,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “They represent Mack’s dedication to solving real-world challenges for our customers while continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in trucking.”

Honoring Tradition, Driving Forward

Mack Trucks is not only a symbol of American manufacturing excellence but also a brand with a global impact. Its products are sold and serviced in more than 45 countries, with heavy-duty trucks meticulously crafted at the Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) plant in Pennsylvania and medium-duty models produced at the Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO) facility in Virginia.

At the Mack Trucks Historical Museum, visitors can explore how the company’s timeless values endured through decades. “What’s remarkable about Mack’s 125-year journey is how the core values have remained constant even as the technology has evolved,” said Doug Maney, curator of the museum.

Innovating for a Sustainable Future

Mack Trucks is not just reflecting on its past but leading the charge into a more sustainable and innovative future. Electric models like the LR Electric refuse truck and MD Electric series are paving the way for zero-emission fleets in cities nationwide.

“Our 125th anniversary isn’t just about celebrating our past – it’s about driving toward an even more innovative future,” said Stephen Roy. “The same spirit that inspired Jack and Gus Mack to build their first vehicle continues to drive us forward as we pioneer electric and autonomous technologies.”

Experience the Legacy

From humble beginnings in Brooklyn to becoming a global transportation icon, Mack Trucks’ story is one of resilience, progress, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Curious to learn more about their 125 years of legacy and the innovations shaping their next chapter?
The National Association of Small Trucking Companies (NASTC) recently recognized 20 exemplary drivers as “America’s Best Drivers,” boasting a staggering 52,509,908 accident-free miles with over 600 years of combined experience. The truckers, nominated by NASTC member fleets for their exceptional driving records, took center stage at the association’s highly anticipated annual conference in Nashville, Tennessee, receiving direct commendations on November 8.

Tracy Rushing, Executive Director of Safety and Recruiting at RE Garrison Trucking Inc., has been awarded the esteemed title of 2024 Influential Woman in Trucking by the Women in Trucking Association (WIT). This accolade was announced during the WIT Accelerate! Conference and Expo held in Dallas, Texas.

Recognition from WIT

The president and CEO of WIT, Jennifer Hedrick, expressed her admiration, stating, “Women In Trucking is honored each year to name a leader in our industry who demonstrates remarkable grit, talent and passion to advance opportunities for women in trucking. We’re thrilled to give this honor to Tracy Rushing this year. Tracy’s commitment to this profession and desire to mentor future leaders is an example for all of us.”

Award Sponsored by Daimler Truck North America

Sponsored by Daimler Truck North America (DTNA), the award highlights the contributions of female pioneers in the trucking sector.

Rushing shared her appreciation, “I’m incredibly grateful to be named 2024 Influential Woman in Trucking but this honor isn’t mine alone. It belongs to all the women who have paved the way and continue to push our industry forward. I’m just proud to be a part of this community of strong, dedicated women who work tirelessly to keep America moving. We’re all in this together, and I’m thankful every day that I get to be a trucker.”

Panel Discussion and Announcement

The announcement followed a panel discussion titled “Becoming an Influential Woman in Trucking,” featuring finalists Lisa Gonnerman, VP of Enterprise Services at TA Dedicated, and Sheri Aaberg, COO at Transport Enterprise Leasing. Facilitators included Kelley Martin and Heather Callahan of DTNA, recognized as 2024 WIT Top Women to Watch in Transportation. Rushing later captivated nearly 2,000 attendees with her personal experiences and insights.

Rushing’s Journey and Contributions

Beginning her career three decades ago in a scale house, Rushing progressed into leadership roles, driven by perseverance and mentorship. She offered insights into her early days in trucking, underscoring the significance of building relationships within the industry. Her inspirational message encouraged others to discover their “why” in trucking and to create a legacy of support and opportunity.

Rushing’s active involvement includes memberships in SHRM, TCA, and the Alabama Trucking Association’s SMMC. She serves on various committees, including ATA Comp Fund’s RMAC and as chair of TCA’s Safety, Recruiting, and Retention Committee.

A Vision of Community

Reflecting on the conference, Kelley Martin noted, “This year, Daimler Truck North America attended the WIT Accelerate! Conference & Expo with the theme ‘one of many.’ It’s about being part of a larger community, not just the only one or the best one, but one of many. The finalists for the Influential Woman in Trucking Award embody this vision. Through their dedication and hard work, they are paving the way for women to excel and thrive in our industry. Additionally, I’d like to congratulate Tracy Rushing for being named the 2024 Influential Woman in Trucking. Her outstanding career and unwavering passion have made a lasting impact on the trucking industry and beyond and she is truly deserving of this prestigious honor.”

Tracy Rushing’s achievements are paving the way for the next generation of leaders in trucking, leaving a legacy of empowerment and progress.
