Truck drivers on southbound Interstate 75 in Bay County, Michigan, should be aware that the Bay City Rest Area is closed for reconstruction and won’t reopen until May 2026. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is carrying out extensive work, including rebuilding the facility, updating ramps and utilities, and improving the parking lot to better serve travelers.

The $3.9 million project aims to provide safer, more dependable stops for everyone on the road — especially truckers who rely on rest areas during long hauls. While the site is closed, drivers will need to plan for alternative locations to park, fuel, or take breaks.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlighted the importance of this work in Michigan’s larger infrastructure plan: “Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,” she said. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime.”

This closure is part of a broader effort to modernize rest areas across the state, ensuring drivers have safe, updated facilities when traveling Michigan highways. Truckers and other travelers should plan accordingly until the Bay City Rest Area reopens in May 2026.
