A new reporting platform from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association is designed to help trucking and logistics companies share information about cyber threats, freight fraud, and cargo crime affecting the industry.

The NMFTA recently launched its Threat Report Portal, a tool that allows carriers, brokers, shippers, and third-party logistics providers to anonymously report cyber incidents and cargo-related crimes. Companies that join NMFTA’s free Threat Intelligence Network can submit reports, review anonymous reports from other members, and receive alerts about emerging threats.

The goal is to help transportation companies identify risks sooner and learn from incidents affecting other organizations before those same tactics spread more widely throughout the industry.

Industry Faces Growing Cyber and Cargo Security Challenges

Cargo theft and freight fraud have become growing concerns across trucking and logistics. In addition to traditional cargo theft, companies are increasingly dealing with schemes that involve technology, identity theft, and fraudulent load activity.

The new portal accepts reports involving:

Cargo theft

Fictitious pickups

Load redirection schemes

Freight fraud

Ransomware attacks

Network intrusions

Identity-based attacks

Other transportation-related cyber threats

By collecting reports from across the industry, NMFTA hopes to create a broader view of the risks transportation companies are currently facing.

Anonymous Reporting Designed to Encourage Participation

One challenge with threat reporting is that some companies may hesitate to publicly discuss cyber incidents or fraud events. The Threat Report Portal uses anonymous reporting to encourage participation while still allowing members to benefit from information shared by others.

According to NMFTA Chief Operations and Technical Officer Joe Ohr, no single organization has complete visibility into every threat affecting the transportation industry.

“Threat actors are constantly adapting their tactics, and no single organization has visibility into every threat facing the industry,” Ohr said. “When organizations share what they’re experiencing, the entire industry benefits. By combining real-time industry reporting with NMFTA’s threat analysis, the portal helps organizations stay informed, communicate emerging risks, and take proactive steps to protect their operations.”

Reports Can Trigger Rapid Industry Notifications

The system is designed to provide near-immediate notifications to network members when new incidents are reported.

According to Ohr, these alerts can help organizations identify emerging risks and take preventive action based on events occurring elsewhere in the industry.

Rather than waiting for broader reports or public announcements, participating organizations can receive information shortly after incidents are submitted through the network.

For trucking companies, faster access to threat information may help reduce exposure to developing fraud schemes and cyber risks.

Information Will Support Future Fraud Prevention Resources

NMFTA plans to use information gathered through the portal to strengthen educational resources and fraud prevention efforts.

According to Ohr, the organization analyzes reported incidents to identify trends, create best practices, and develop guidance that can help transportation companies improve their defenses.

Many of those resources will be made available through NMFTA’s Freight Fraud Prevention Hub, which provides access to educational materials, verification standards, and fraud prevention information for transportation and logistics professionals.

Insights gathered through the reporting network will also be discussed during NMFTA’s upcoming Cybersecurity Conference.

Cargo Theft Continues to Draw Industry Attention

The launch comes as cargo theft and freight fraud continue to receive attention throughout the transportation industry.

Research from the American Transportation Research Institute estimates that cargo theft costs the trucking industry more than $18 million per day.

The new reporting platform was introduced shortly after a coalition of nearly 200 businesses and trade organizations sent a letter to Senate leadership supporting legislation intended to address freight fraud and cargo theft.

As cybercrime and cargo theft tactics continue to evolve, industry organizations are increasingly focusing on information sharing as one way to help transportation companies identify and respond to threats more quickly.

What This Means for Trucking Companies

Fraud schemes, cyberattacks, and cargo theft incidents continue to affect carriers of all sizes.

The Threat Report Portal gives transportation companies a new way to share information about incidents, receive alerts about emerging threats, and learn from activity affecting other organizations within the industry.

As participation grows, NMFTA believes the network can help create a clearer picture of the threats facing trucking and logistics companies while supporting broader fraud prevention efforts.

The Truck Drivers USA editorial team creates practical, driver-focused content covering industry topics, job trends, and real-world decisions that impact drivers at every stage of their careers. Each article is written to provide clear, accurate information that drivers can use.

Registration is now open for the American Trucking Associations’ annual Safety, Security, & Human Resources National Conference and Exhibition, a key industry event focused on safety, security, and workforce issues across trucking.

Hosted by the American Trucking Associations, the conference is co-hosted by ATA’s Safety Management Council and Transportation Security Council. The event brings together industry professionals responsible for policy, risk management, compliance, and operational decision-making.

“Earlier this year, the 2025 SSHR National Conference in Louisville showcased the power of innovation and collaboration,” said Dan Horvath, ATA’s COO. “The sessions equipped safety, security, and HR professionals with practical strategies to meet today’s challenges and prepare for what’s ahead. The momentum from Louisville has us energized for the 2026 conference in Oklahoma City, where we’ll continue driving a safer, more secure, forward-thinking mindset for the industry.”

Conference details and focus areas

The 2026 conference is scheduled for April 1–3, 2026, at the Omni Oklahoma City. More than 400 attendees are expected to take part in educational sessions and networking opportunities.

Programming will be organized into four dedicated tracks:

Safety

Security

Human resources

Claims and loss prevention

Sessions are designed to deliver practical insight into current challenges, with discussions centered on real-world application rather than theory.

Speakers, sessions, and networking

The agenda includes three general sessions featuring industry leadership, including ATA President and CEO Chris Spear, along with keynote speaker Tim Richardson. Attendees will also participate in panels and interactive roundtables covering topics such as camera technology, driver coaching, artificial intelligence, and recruitment and retention.

“Our mission with SSHR is to create a space where trucking professionals can collaborate, grow, and elevate their impact,” said Jacob Pierce, executive director of ATA’s Safety Management Council & Transportation Security Council. “By uniting a wide range of expertise and perspectives, we strengthen the industry’s safety and security efforts while advancing a more innovative and supportive human resources landscape for the trucking workforce.”

In addition to educational sessions, the conference will feature networking events, including a casino night and an evening at TopGolf.

Registration now open

Registration is now available through ATA’s official SSHR conference website. The event continues to serve as a central meeting point for advancing safety, security, and human resources practices across the trucking industry.

Truckers Advantage fuel card holders are being targeted by scam emails that falsely claim to be from WEX or Fleet One. These fraudulent emails urge recipients to copy and paste a link and enter a login code to avoid having their accounts closed.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has confirmed that these messages are scams. Several members have reported receiving them. OOIDA emphasized that the correspondence did not come from their organization or fuel card partners.

WEX, OOIDA’s official fuel card partner, has reiterated that it will never send unsolicited emails requesting sensitive information such as account numbers, card details, or PIN codes. The company advises deleting these emails immediately upon receipt.

“Many businesses have experienced increasingly sophisticated and numerous phishing attacks through emails and phone calls to obtain their online account credentials,” stated WEX. “Never click on email links or give up your credentials over the phone to unverified sources.”

Protect Yourself From Scammers

Fraud tactics constantly evolve, but you can reduce the risk of falling victim by following basic security tips. Here’s how to safeguard your accounts and personal information from scams:

Stay Alert for Suspicious Messages: Be cautious of unsolicited emails, phone calls, or messages claiming to require urgent action.

Guard Your Personal Information: Never share account numbers, card details, passwords, or temporary codes with anyone.

Avoid Clicking on Unverified Links: Do not click on links in unexpected emails or texts. Instead, contact the company directly using a trusted and verified phone number to confirm the legitimacy of the communication.

Verify Requests Independently: If someone requests payment or sensitive details, always double-check the legitimacy by contacting the company or individual through official channels.

Don’t Rely on Embedded Contact Information: Details provided in suspicious messages could be fake. Use verified contact information from trusted sources like official websites.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication: This will add an extra layer of security to your accounts, particularly those containing sensitive or financial data.

Monitor Account Activity Regularly: Review statements, transaction history, and online activity to catch suspicious behavior quickly.

Check Account Access Controls: Ensure only authorized users have access to your accounts and associated purchasing methods.

Get Help If You Suspect a Scam

WEX provides round-the-clock customer support to assist customers. If you’re targeted by a phishing attempt, contact WEX’s 24/7 customer service at 833-225-5939. Always reference the phone number on your card or invoice to guarantee you’re speaking with the correct department.

By taking proactive measures and staying vigilant, you can protect yourself and your accounts from scams that rely on exploiting trust and urgency. Stay secure, stay informed, and always verify before you act.

The Arkansas Trucking Association (ATA) is praising the state legislature for passing a robust set of laws aimed at combating organized retail crime, including Act 322, which imposes stricter penalties for cargo theft. This move marks a significant step forward in protecting the state’s transportation and logistics industries.

Addressing a Critical Concern

“The industry saw unprecedented levels of cargo theft last year, up 27% from the previous year and a 1,500% increase since 2001,” said Shannon Newton, president of ATA. “These laws demonstrate that Arkansas lawmakers understand the economic threat organized retail crime and cargo theft pose to our industry and all consumers.”

The ATA highlights how the collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, and officials like Attorney General Griffin was instrumental in the success of this legislative package, which seeks to deter cargo theft and strengthen supply chain security.

A Priority for the Trucking Sector

Sponsored by Sen. Ben Gilmore (R-Crossett) and Rep. Jeremiah Moore (R-Clarendon), and strongly supported by the Arkansas Attorney General’s office, the organized retail crime initiative targets a pressing issue for the trucking industry. The legislation received broad bipartisan backing as it advanced through the legislature.

“By recognizing that organized crime operates throughout the supply chain, from retail stores to transportation networks, this collaboration has produced meaningful legislation that will better protect Arkansas businesses and consumers,” Newton said. “We remain committed to working with our partners to develop practical solutions to the challenges facing our industry.”

Key Features of the Organized Retail Crime Policy

A structured plan addressing organized retail theft networks (Act 321).

Up to 10 additional years of penalties for organized cargo theft (Act 322).

Prohibition of earned release credits for the enhanced portion of sentences related to cargo theft (Act 322).

Coverage of all cargo in transit, including trucks, railroads, and intermodal containers (Act 322).

Criminal penalties for fraudulent gift card schemes based on redemption value (SB302).

Immediate enforcement supported by an emergency declaration.

A Strong Warning Against Cargo Theft

“This comprehensive legislation sends a clear message that organized retail crime and cargo theft will not be tolerated in Arkansas and will be met with serious consequences,” Newton emphasized.

With the passage of these laws, Arkansas positions itself as a leader in supply chain security, reinforcing the importance of collaboration to combat organized crime and protect both businesses and consumers.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is extending an invitation to carriers to participate in an important survey about cargo theft. Launched in August, this initiative aims to shed light on the prevalence and characteristics of cargo theft in America. The survey’s findings will help “better quantify cargo theft types, frequency, geography, and commodities targeted,” according to ATRI.

ATRI’s Vice President, Jeffrey Short, recently discussed the survey’s significance, highlighting the urgency of this research, Short pointed to alarming FBI estimates indicating that cargo thieves cost the industry $15 billion to $30 billion each year.

The survey seeks detailed insights, such as hotspots for theft and effective prevention strategies. A key focus is identifying which items are most frequently stolen. “We definitely want to figure out what the most targeted products are out there, so that we can inform them, ‘This is the kind of thing you want to keep an eye out for,'” Short explained.

Regardless of the size of the carrier, thieves tend to focus more on the cargo itself rather than the company transporting it. “I don’t think larger carriers or smaller carriers are being targeted more often. I think it more has to do with what it is they’re hauling,” Short stated. He noted that easy-to-sell items are prime targets for thieves.

ATRI has already received around 100 responses from motor carriers and brokers. The deadline to submit your input is September 30. Participants can fill out the survey online here or download a PDF version to return by mail. Rest assured, all information provided will remain confidential, and participants will be given an early copy of the comprehensive report.
