What started as a hobby in a Chicago gamer’s room has now set him on a path toward the trucking industry—one gear shift at a time.

Connor Hudziak didn’t grow up around big rigs. There were no truckers in the family, and his first exposure to the lifestyle came through a screen, not a highway. But while others were battling dragons or playing first-person shooters, Connor was clocking hours in American Truck Simulator—a game designed to mirror real trucking down to the finest detail. From handling deliveries and navigating logistics to managing a digital fleet, it gave him a taste of the industry without ever leaving home.

And Connor didn’t just play casually. He recreated the truck driving experience with a custom setup that included a steering wheel, shifter, control box, and pedals—choosing to haul loads in a candy-apple red Western Star 57X.

At the time, he couldn’t have imagined how closely that virtual truck would mirror his future.

A Sim Turns Into Something Real

Western Star Trucks, in partnership with SCS Software—the creators of American Truck Simulator—recognized the simulator’s impact. With the game’s popularity among both enthusiasts and aspiring drivers, Western Star saw an opportunity to connect with the next generation of truckers in a fresh, meaningful way.

They launched the “Star Nation Customer Experience” at their Madras, Oregon test center and invited two lucky sweepstakes winners from the simulator community. One of them was Connor.

The event brought Connor face-to-face with professionals in the field and digital influencers like trucking YouTuber Casey LaDelle. Though new to the real-life trucking scene, Connor quickly found common ground—and even stole the spotlight during a backing challenge on the test track, beating seasoned drivers despite never having driven a real semi before.

A CDL Gift That Changed Everything

Impressed by his talent and passion, the Western Star team, along with LaDelle, took things a step further. At the closing dinner, they surprised Connor with news that would change his life: they had come together to fund his Commercial Driver’s License training.

The moment was emotional and unforgettable.

“It’s honestly been life-changing,” he said. “This was more than just a trip—it was a doorway into a future I’ve always dreamed about.”

Steering Toward a New Career

Today, Connor is actively working on obtaining his CDL and has plans to start driving part-time for his current employer, with hopes of going full-time in the near future.

His story highlights what’s possible when a digital passion is met with real-world support. More importantly, it shows how companies like Western Star are thinking outside the box—using gaming, mentorship, and opportunity to help passionate individuals like Connor turn a virtual dream into a tangible career.

From simulator pedals to real truck brakes, Connor’s journey is proof that the road to trucking doesn’t always start at a truck stop—sometimes, it begins with a keyboard.

Simulators are emerging as a game-changing tool to attract and train the next generation of truck drivers. Not only do they help develop essential skills, but they also appeal to younger individuals who are tech-savvy and eager to join the industry.

Why Simulators?

Simulators offer a realistic driving experience with high-definition graphics and immersive sound. They provide a safe space for both new and seasoned drivers to hone their skills, correct bad habits, and improve fuel efficiency. Russell Hoyt, co-founder of MG Truck Driving School, says, “When we get a driver trained on a simulator, they really understand the basics and fundamentals of driving a truck. It is remarkable that technology can do such things.”

Advanced simulators even replicate emergencies, like jackknifing, allowing drivers to practice critical maneuvers such as controlled driving and emergency braking without the risks of real-life testing. Some models are integrating AI and virtual reality, making training sessions even more authentic.

Engaging Younger Generations

Organizations such as the Nebraska Trucking Association use mobile simulators to engage younger audiences. Kent Grisham, president and CEO, highlights that simulators are pivotal for workforce development, especially in community colleges where many students get their first taste of driving. He notes, “If you want them to practice driving on icy roads, it is much better to practice in a simulator than to take them out in a blizzard.”

UPS’s Innovative Approach

UPS has integrated simulators into its nationwide training programs. According to Tristan Christensen, UPS content development director for U.S. Operations Training, “The UPS driving simulator is built inside an actual UPS package car, which gives the realistic feel of the actual environment.” These truck driving simulators cover aspects from safe driving techniques to high-risk scenarios, ensuring drivers are well-prepared for challenges on the road.

Overcoming Barriers

While simulators are promising, their adoption is limited by cost and space constraints. Fremont Contract Carriers, for instance, acquired their simulator at a bargain during an auction. Tim McCormick, president and CEO, underscores the benefits, explaining, “We thought, ‘Why don’t we assess their skills instead of passing on them?’” This approach has not only broadened their recruitment pool but also enhanced training and skill evaluation.

Moving Forward

Simulators can drastically reduce accident rates—by up to 80%, according to Hoyt—and save on equipment costs by preventing wear and tear. Lowering the cost of these simulators and shifting industry perceptions can promote wider adoption. As Hoyt points out, “It really does make a superior driver.”

Simulators are transforming how trucking companies recruit and train drivers, making the industry safer and more appealing for emerging talents. For companies willing to invest in this technology, the return is not just seen in reduced accidents but also in a stronger, more skilled workforce.

The trucking industry has made great strides in welcoming women to driving careers. In recent years, we saw record numbers of women getting behind the wheel. While the numbers have greatly increased, the number of women drivers still sits at only around 17%.

With a growing shortage of qualified drivers, this is the perfect time to break down the barriers and create a more diverse workforce in this industry.

The nonprofit Women in Trucking Association has taken a unique approach to address this shortage with the introduction of their new 18-wheel driving simulator named “WITney”. This cutting-edge simulator provides an opportunity for those curious about truck driving to try something new, rewarding, and adventurous. The simulator is designed to give women and girls a feel for life behind the wheel of a big rig and potentially unlock a new career path.

The WITney trailer has been touring the country at various events aimed at exposing women and girls to the industry so they can make educated and informed decisions as to whether this is a path they’d like to pursue.

Just this month, the trailer has made stops in Detroit Michigan at an event hosted by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, and in Rhode Island at an event that was held in collaboration with the Rhode Island Trucking Association and Howes, a company which makes trucking and diesel related products.

What’s it like to try out the simulator?

The simulator has 20 programs and six lessons.

Haily Dobish who works for XPO Logistics as a trucking supervisor wanted to find out what life could be like behind the wheel instead of in the office, so she took a day trip to the event with her co-worker, Mia Furtado, who works in Human Resources.

“Now that I just drove on the simulator, it’s like ‘Okay’, I think a little bit more about it,'” said Dobish.

“The turns for me were the difficult part,” Furtado said, but she’s not ruling out practice to make perfect.

Howes was all too happy to host the event to help women navigate the obstacles of a career in trucking.

“The trucking industry [has] a big shortage. We’re trying to get more women involved,” co-owner Deborah Howes said.

“That education [that we provide,] and more of a level playing field, has really invited women to join the industry and profession,” said Jennifer Hedrick, president and CEO of the Women in Trucking Association.
