Planning for the second half of the year is already underway as Freight Transportation Research opens early registration for its 2026 Transportation Conference. The event is set for Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 in Indianapolis and comes at a time when freight conditions continue to shift without much consistency.

Market Uncertainty Driving Demand for Clearer Direction

Freight markets have remained difficult to read, with changing demand, capacity swings, and broader economic pressure making it harder to plan ahead. Companies are often forced to react instead of getting out in front of changes.

FTR says those conditions are shaping the focus of this year’s conference, with an emphasis on turning market signals into decisions that can actually be applied in day to day operations.

What the Conference Will Focus On

The sessions will center on breaking down larger economic trends and translating them into practical takeaways. Topics will include freight demand patterns, equipment cycles, and capacity shifts across multiple modes.

The content will be built around FTR’s Freight•cast forecasting approach, which is used to project where the market is heading and how different segments may respond.

Tracks Built Around Key Segments

The event is structured so attendees can focus on the areas that matter most to their operation.

Truck sessions begin Aug. 31 with equipment trends, followed by freight market conditions on Sept. 1

Freight focused sessions will cover truck freight on Sept. 1 and rail freight on Sept. 2

Rail sessions will look at demand on Sept. 2 and equipment outlooks on Sept. 3

This setup allows participants to move between topics depending on where they need the most insight.

More Than Just Market Data

Beyond the sessions, the conference is expected to bring together decision makers from across trucking, rail, and intermodal operations. That mix creates an opportunity to compare how different parts of the supply chain are reacting to the same market conditions.

Why It Matters Right Now

With freight patterns continuing to shift, having a clearer read on where things may be headed can impact everything from equipment purchases to load planning. Events like this are designed to help connect the dots between what is happening now and what may come next.

If you’ve ever wondered just how many semi-trucks are out there rolling across the U.S., the latest numbers put it around 3 million registered semi-trucks. That’s according to current info from TruckInfo.net and the American Trucking Associations. These big rigs haul more than 70% of the country’s freight, so they’re a huge part of the economy and your daily grind.

But beyond the numbers, what does this actually mean for drivers like you today?

Growing Demand, More Freight, More Chances

Even with the ups and downs in recent years, freight hauling is still going strong. Online shopping keeps booming, and businesses need trucks to keep things moving. That means more work and, hopefully, better pay if you play your cards right.

Specializing in hot spots like refrigerated goods or regional hauls might just open up steadier gigs. The ATA predicts freight volume will keep climbing through 2025, so the demand for drivers isn’t going anywhere.

Technology and Teamwork Make a Difference

With millions of trucks on the road, the industry’s gotten smarter. Tools like load boards and routing apps help you plan better and avoid wasted miles. Staying connected with carriers and shippers means less downtime and more steady runs.

You’re not just out there alone anymore — tech is making it easier to find loads and get paid quicker.

Parking is Getting Some Attention

Parking has always been a headache for drivers. But the good news is there’s federal money now going into building more truck parking spots and improving rest areas. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is helping push those projects forward.

That means more places to park safely during your breaks, which everyone knows makes a huge difference.

Roads Are Improving, Slowly but Surely

The roads and bridges we drive on aren’t exactly perfect, but investments are coming. More funds are being poured into fixing highways and easing congestion, which should make your trips smoother and less hard on your truck.

Better infrastructure means fewer unexpected repairs and less time stuck in traffic.

Staying Ahead in a Crowded Field

Knowing how many trucks are out there helps you see the bigger picture. The key is to stay updated on industry changes, whether new rules, tech trends, or freight demands.

Finding your niche — like hauling specialty loads or regional runs — could give you a leg up in this busy field.

Bottom Line

About 3 million semi trucks on the road mean trucking is alive and kicking. For drivers, that means plenty of chances to find good work and grow your career if you keep learning and adapting.

The Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) 2025 brought together industry leaders, innovators, and drivers to discuss the latest trends transforming the trucking industry. Lori Furnell, President of Truck Drivers USA, attended the event and shared key takeaways from the experience.

A Well-Organized Event

Lori pointed out that MATS 2025 stood out for its thoughtful layout, which made it easy for attendees to navigate various sectors of the industry. “They grouped recruiting, technology, etc., together so that you could truly contrast and compare similar solutions,” Lori noted. This organization helped everyone make the most of their time at the event by focusing on the most relevant solutions.

Big Innovations in a Smaller Show

“While the event was smaller compared to previous years, it was packed with fresh ideas and new solutions, and non-traditional approaches to trucking,” Lori continued. Despite its reduced size, the event remained a significant platform for showcasing the latest advancements in the trucking industry.

Game-Changing Technologies

There were a couple of noteworthy innovations that stood out to Lori. “There was a portable tire changing solution that allowed drivers to change tires without depending on outside vendors to get them moving again,” she explained. This product enables drivers to minimize downtime and keep their trucks running smoothly and efficiently.

Another noteworthy innovation was an AI-powered app designed to streamline business operations for owner-operators. “This new app assists owner-operators in finding a load, negotiating the rates, dispatching the truck, and providing back-office assistance through the entire process,” Lori noted. This app is part of a broader trend towards automation, helping drivers manage their businesses more effectively.

Driver-Focused Tech in Recruitment

MATS 2025 also highlighted the rise of driver-focused apps that streamline the recruitment process. “I talked with two vendors who were capturing the driver profile and sharing it directly with trucking companies,” Lori said. These apps aim to redefine the way driver data is collected and shared, making it easier for drivers to connect with potential employers.

Building Industry Connections

Networking remains a key component of MATS, and this year, Lori took full advantage of the opportunity to expand her professional connections. “I attended a few events with recruiting leaders and walked away with a broader network,” she shared. Events like MATS are a great way to build valuable relationships that can lead to new business opportunities and insights.

Tackling the Truck Parking Crisis

Parking remains a significant challenge for truckers, and this year’s MATS addressed this issue with several new ideas. “There were several parking solutions that allow drivers to use an app to find and book parking. We are seeing an upgrade in safe parking options. Drivers deserve a place to rest in a secure environment,” Lori explained. These innovations are crucial in enhancing safety and ensuring drivers have reliable places to rest during long hauls.

Looking Ahead

MATS 2025 reaffirmed the trucking industry’s commitment to innovation, with new technologies set to improve both efficiency and the overall driver experience. From AI-driven business tools to improved parking solutions, the event showcased how the industry is evolving rapidly.

CarriersEdge has officially revealed the 2025 Best Fleets to Drive For, highlighting the top-performing North American for-hire trucking companies.

“This year, the Best Fleets continued to invest in new and creative programs to enhance the workplace experience for drivers,” said Jane Jazrawy, CEO. “Despite what’s been a tough economy the past couple of years for fleets, the Best Fleets Top 20 and Hall of Fame members have continued to show that the well-being of their drivers remains a top priority.”

Recognizing Excellence in Trucking

The Best Fleets to Drive For program celebrates companies that prioritize exceptional workplace environments for their drivers and independent contractors. To qualify for the program, for-hire carriers operating at least 10 tractor-trailers must be nominated by a current driver or owner-operator.

Companies are then evaluated on various criteria, such as driver pay, benefits, human resources strategies, operational practices, professional development opportunities, and work-life balance initiatives. To ensure a comprehensive assessment, surveys are also conducted with drivers and independent contractors to gauge their satisfaction with the fleet’s work environment.

The companies with the highest scores are named to the prestigious Best Fleets to Drive For list. Those that have earned the recognition for 10 consecutive years—or for seven consecutive years with an overall winner distinction—are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
