The old rest area had only 16 truck stalls, and many were undersized. WisDOT’s improvements now provide 70 truck parking spaces, along with a staging area specifically designed for oversize and overweight vehicles. 

“Interstate 90 plays a vital role in the movement of freight and passengers across Wisconsin, and this safety rest area welcomes travelers, truck drivers, and families with a safe, convenient, and accessible place to take a break along their journey,” said WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman. “This safety rest area exemplifies our commitment to building a better transportation system for everyone here in Wisconsin.” 

Inside the facility, upgrades include brighter lighting, updated vending machines, modern drinking fountains, and restrooms that meet ADA requirements. 

Dan Johnson, president of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association, highlighted the value of these improvements for drivers. “The cornerstone of the trucking industry is safety, and we appreciate the work of the Wisconsin DOT to bring this rest area to completion,” Johnson said. “Truck drivers are the backbone of our economy, and this new rest area will support driver well-being, improve highway safety, and strengthen Wisconsin’s supply chain. We thank the department for recognizing the essential role trucking plays in our state’s economy.” 

The $12.5 million project broke ground in August 2024. WisDOT is also rebuilding two more rest areas on Interstate 43 in Denmark and Maribel. 

Truck Parking Improvements in Other States 

Wisconsin isn’t the only state investing in truck parking. Pennsylvania plans to add more than 1,200 spaces at 133 locations by the end of 2026, with the Turnpike considering an additional 600 spaces across its system. 

Indiana recently reopened an Interstate 65 rest area with double the parking capacity, now accommodating up to 150 trucks at the modernized facility. 

Many state DOTs are also rolling out technology solutions to help drivers locate safe parking spots along their routes, making it easier to comply with hours-of-service rules and stay rested on the road.
