The trucking industry has a new standout young leader. The Next Generation in Trucking Association (NGTA) recently revealed the winners of its first-ever NEXT Top Talent Award, a program created to highlight exceptional CDL drivers and diesel technicians under 30 who are shaping the future of transportation.

Celebrating the Next Generation of Drivers

Lindsey Trent, president and founder of NGTA, praised the nominees and winners for setting a high standard in a demanding field.

“I am in awe of the participation by fleets who took the time to nominate and celebrate such a vital cohort of their workforce — those younger than 30 who are diligently pursuing the fantastic, rewarding careers that trucking offers in professional truck driving jobs and as diesel technicians,” Trent said.

The recognition program focuses on individuals who show safety, dedication, and a drive to make a positive impact within their companies and communities.

Grand Champion CDL Driver: Isaiah Hicks-Dixon

This year’s Grand Champion CDL Driver title went to Isaiah Hicks-Dixon of Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL).

Hicks-Dixon began with ODFL in 2019 as a dock worker and quickly made it known that his goal was to become a driver. His hard work earned him a place in the ODTDT program, where he excelled as both a switcher and combo driver. By January 2022, he had advanced into a linehaul driving role and has been setting an example ever since.

NGTA highlighted his ongoing commitment: taking extra weekend pickups, coaching fellow employees, and always putting customers first. His attitude and performance have made him a role model within ODFL.

“Known for his calm under pressure, impeccable safety record, and outstanding customer service, Hicks-Dixon is frequently praised by customers who specifically request him for their deliveries,” NGTA noted. “He is a professional in every sense—his dress, demeanor, and respect for coworkers make him someone others want to work with. His ‘winning attitude’ is infectious, lifting morale and setting a high bar for everyone around him.”

Honoring a Wide Pool of Talent

Alongside Hicks-Dixon, 56 other young drivers and technicians were named 2025 NEXT Top Talent finalists. Each honoree was recognized for their reliability, growth mindset, and dedication to their teams.

NGTA explained that every finalist would be given a custom banner and commemorative plaque to proudly display at their workplace.

“Each one was selected for their reliability, growth mindset, and contributions to their teams, customers, and communities,” NGTA said.

The CDL driver award winners included professionals from companies such as Gordon Food Service, Cal Valley Trucking, Waste Management, FedEx Freight, Melton Truck Lines, Averitt, Garner Trucking, Koch Trucking, Smith Ready Mix, Ralph Moyle, Inc., Alaska West Express, and more. Old Dominion itself had several honorees in addition to Hicks-Dixon, further showcasing its investment in young talent.

Industry Support Behind the Program

The NEXT Top Talent Award is backed by sponsors Fullbay and Project 61, two organizations focused on advancing careers in trucking and maintenance. Their partnership with NGTA ensures continued support for young professionals entering the field.

The launch of this award underscores the importance of nurturing the next generation in trucking. With drivers like Hicks-Dixon and dozens of other rising stars being recognized, the industry is sending a clear message: the future of trucking is in capable, motivated hands.

The trucking industry is evolving quickly, and its future depends on the energy and dedication of young professionals stepping up to lead the way. This year, the Next Generation in Trucking Association (NGTA) honored that commitment by announcing the winners and finalists of its first-ever NEXT Top Talent Award competition, recognizing CDL drivers and diesel technicians under 30 who are redefining what it means to be a professional in the industry.

Recognizing the Next Wave of Leaders

“I am in awe of the participation by fleets who took the time to nominate and celebrate such a vital cohort of their workforce — those younger than 30 who are diligently pursuing the fantastic, rewarding careers that trucking offers in professional truck driving jobs and as diesel technicians,” said Lindsey Trent, president and founder of NGTA. “Reading through this year’s nominations, there are dozens of amazing stories about young people in our industry, and their work ethic, their commitment, and their promise for what’s ahead for trucking. From those as young as 14 already excelling in their family’s trucking business to those who’ve already worked their way through the ranks into coordinator roles, it was a tall task to narrow this year’s list down to the winners and even harder to select the Grand Champions. Isaiah and Joe were exemplary, and I extend my highest congratulations to them as this year’s NEXT Top Talent Award Grand Champions.”

The NEXT Top Talent Award highlights not only technical skill but also dedication, professionalism, and a drive to keep the industry strong for decades to come.

Grand Champion CDL Driver: Isaiah Hicks-Dixon

Taking the title of 2025 Grand Champion CDL Driver is Isaiah Hicks-Dixon of Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL). His career is a story of persistence and determination, beginning in 2019 as a dock worker before working his way into the ODFL training program. From there, he grew into roles as a switcher, combo driver, and now a respected linehaul driver.

“Known for his calm under pressure, impeccable safety record and outstanding customer service, Hicks-Dixon is frequently praised by customers who specifically request him for their deliveries,” NGTA said. “He is a professional in every sense—his dress, demeanor, and respect for coworkers make him someone others want to work with. His ‘winning attitude’ is infectious, lifting morale and setting a high bar for everyone around him.”

Grand Champion Diesel Technician: Joe Reed

The 2025 Grand Champion Diesel Technician honor went to Joe Reed of Kenan Advantage Group (KAG). Starting as a technician, Reed steadily climbed the ranks to become Shop Foreman for KAG Energy in North Canton, Ohio. His leadership has been credited with transforming the shop’s performance and atmosphere.

“Reed leads by example and holds himself to high standards while motivating his team to grow alongside him,” NGTA said. “His responsiveness and ability to manage KPIs effectively have strengthened KAG’s terminal operations by keeping trucks on the road and maximizing load revenue. Reed actively collaborates with corporate fleet leaders, and his hunger for learning has positioned him for even greater opportunities in leadership, such as terminal manager or regional maintenance manager roles. His mentorship has raised the performance of other team members, and several technicians have expressed interest in advancing their careers because of Joe’s example. He exemplifies what it means to lead with humility, skill, and a vision for the future.”

Why Programs Like This Matter

Beyond the two grand champions, NGTA also recognized 56 finalists from fleets nationwide. Each one represents the next wave of skilled drivers and technicians who will play a critical role in keeping supply chains moving.

“Also, as you will see in our winners list, several companies have multiple NEXT Top Talent Award winners, showcasing their commitment to being leaders in our industry in creating programs and cultures that create opportunities for young people, as well as work environments where they succeed and thrive,” said Trent.

Sponsors like Fullbay and Project 61 underscored the importance of investing in the next generation.

“Technicians keep our economy moving, and the industry cannot thrive without investing in the next generation,” said Matt Stone, CMO of Fullbay. “At Fullbay, we believe in recognizing rising talent and providing the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed. Supporting future technicians and drivers is not just the right thing to do; it is essential to ensuring the long-term strength and sustainability of the heavy-duty repair industry.”

“At Project 61, we’re committed to improving the health and well-being of professional drivers—those who keep our country moving,” added Jeremy Reymer, founder of Project 61. “Sponsoring the NEXT Top Talent Award is our way of helping empower the next generation of professionals who lead with heart, purpose, and pride in their work. This award is about recognizing rising professionals who represent the future of trucking and exemplify what it truly means to be a professional.”

Building the Future of Trucking

Industry leaders agree this recognition is about more than awards—it’s about inspiring a generation.

“It is inspiring and encouraging to see these incredible young people recognized and celebrated for their hard work and dedication to our industry,” said Leah Shaver, president and CEO of The National Transportation Institute. “The NEXT Top Talent program paints an exciting picture about where our industry can go from here. It’s critical that we continue to tell these stories loudly and often. The data is clear: As an industry, we are lagging in our progress in bringing younger people into our industry and keeping them here. In the next 5-10 years, we need to make big strides in recruiting our next generation of truck drivers and diesel technicians. Having so many amazing examples to point to as success stories in our industry and at our companies should be a catalyst for us all to double down on our efforts to reach and grow the number of young people aspiring to careers in trucking.”

With its NEXT Top Talent Awards, NGTA is sending a clear message: the trucking industry’s future is already in motion, powered by dedicated young professionals. From CDL drivers like Hicks-Dixon to shop leaders like Reed, these rising stars are proof that the next generation is ready to lead with passion, professionalism, and purpose.

In an effort to spotlight the rising generation shaping the future of trucking, the Next Generation in Trucking Association has introduced its newest initiative: the NEXT Top Talent Award. This award honors standout truck drivers and diesel technicians under the age of 30 who are making a clear impact in the field—on the road and in the shop.

These aren’t just workers doing their jobs. They’re young professionals who are stepping up, demonstrating exceptional skill, professionalism, and a deep commitment to safety, quality, and growth. The award is a nod to those who are proving that trucking and diesel careers can offer purpose, pride, and long-term opportunity.

“These young professionals are setting the standard for what it means to build a meaningful, purpose-driven career in the industry — and we want to recognize them for it,” said Lindsey Trent, president of the Next Generation in Trucking Association.

Who’s Eligible for the NEXT Top Talent Award?

To qualify, nominees must:

Be employed in the U.S. as a truck driver or technician

Be under 30 years old

Demonstrate excellence in skill and professionalism

Prioritize safety and quality in their work

Contribute positively to their team or company

Show motivation to grow within the industry

Inspire others with their passion for trucking

Winners will be named in September 2025, aligning with both National Truck Driver Appreciation Week and National Technician Appreciation Week. Those selected will receive national recognition and will be featured in the association’s communications and at key industry events.

Rebecca Brewster, president and COO of the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), emphasized why programs like this are so important:

“With the average age of today’s truck driver at 47, our industry must be intentional about attracting and retaining younger talent.”

How to Nominate a Rising Star

Nominations for the NEXT Top Talent Award are open through August 29, 2025. If you know a young driver or technician who’s raising the bar, this is the chance to shine a light on their work. Submit a nomination here.

Building a workforce that includes young talent is a challenge for fleet managers everywhere. Gen Z and Millennial drivers seek more than just a paycheck—they want flexible jobs, opportunities for career advancement, and employers who invest in modern technology and a supportive workplace culture. Here’s what actually works when fleets want to get their attention and secure quality recruits.

Create a Real Presence Where Young People Are

Social platforms like Instagram and TikTok are where young adults spend a lot of time. The most effective fleets use these channels to post authentic content—real driver experiences, quick behind-the-scenes videos, and company updates that show what day-to-day driving is like. This type of content builds trust and helps candidates picture themselves joining your team.

Streamline the Hiring Experience

Application processes that work for everyone else won’t win over Gen Z. Forms should be short, mobile-friendly, and easy to fill out anytime, anywhere. Many forward-thinking fleets now offer virtual interviews and even app-based onboarding to get new hires started without delay.

Lead With True Flexibility

Rising generations value their time and work-life balance. Fleets that offer regular home time, flexible shifts, and even part-time driving roles see higher interest and lower turnover. Clear vacation policies and options for mental health days are no longer extras—they are expectations for modern drivers.

Highlight Tech-Investment and Sustainability

Newer drivers care about working for companies that use the latest technology and care for the environment. Point out tech features like smart routing, advanced safety systems, and upgraded cab amenities in job listings. Share ongoing improvements in eco-friendly practices to appeal to candidates who are passionate about sustainability.

Offer Growth and Learning Opportunities

No one wants to feel stuck in a dead-end job, including young drivers. Demonstrate a commitment to growth by offering paid training programs, mentorship with veteran drivers, and a clear path from rookie to expert. Many fleets offer skill-building workshops—both in-person and digital—that help drivers advance their careers and boost retention at the same time.

Tap Into Referrals and Local Partnerships

Your current team can help bring in the next wave of drivers. Employee referral programs, especially those that reward successful hires, are powerful recruitment tools. Establish relationships with community colleges, vocational programs, and local job fairs to connect directly with young job seekers in your area.

Build an Inclusive, Positive Culture

Younger drivers want transparency and respect. They look for fleets that promote diversity, recognize achievements, and provide health and wellness resources that show management cares about every driver, not just the bottom line. Simple steps—such as giving regular feedback, offering gym discounts or wellness apps, and fostering open communication—go a long way.

Combining these actions creates a real competitive advantage. Fleets that adapt and listen to young drivers’ needs fill open seats faster and build a more sustainable operation for years to come.
