Truck driver Jonathan Adams, hailing from Grand Rapids, MN, has been recognized by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) as a Highway Angel. His courageous actions involved rescuing a trapped accident victim and providing crucial information to authorities. Adams is employed by Prime, Inc., based in Springfield, MO.
On June 24, 2023, around 4 p.m. in Simpsonville, KY, the dramatic scene unfolded. Adams, cruising along I-64, witnessed an accident take place before his eyes. One passenger vehicle abruptly veered into another lane, causing another vehicle to lose control, ultimately flipping end over end multiple times.
“Me being prior law enforcement-trained and I used to be a CPR instructor — I’m definitely a first responder — I definitely needed to pull over and help,” Adams said.
Adams, who is also a U.S. Air Force veteran, acted swiftly and called 911 when he saw a car in distress. Upon arriving at the scene, he discovered three people outside the vehicle and was informed that there was still one passenger trapped inside.
Adams took immediate action, forcefully opening the door and finding the passenger in a severely injured state. Despite being told that the passenger couldn’t get out, Adams pulled him to safety and carried him away from the crash site and onto the roadside.
After ensuring the safety of all the passengers, Adams turned off the car and disconnected the battery to prevent any potential fires.
“Everybody was just head concussions, seat belt injuries and just broken bones,” Adams said, noting he was able to inform the first responders about injury details to help them know what vehicles to bring to the scene. Another bystander who stopped to help was a nurse, so Adams asked her to keep an eye on a crash victim with head trauma and to not let her fall asleep.
After EMS arrived, Adams promptly informed the crew about the urgency of the situation and the individuals requiring immediate assistance. He coordinated with the police and willingly provided his dash cam footage, which proved instrumental in identifying the vehicle that had abruptly changed lanes. As emergency personnel got to work, Adams remained present at the site for an hour, actively assisting the police in their efforts.
“I really do well in a time of crisis,” Adams noted. “If I get hurt, I’ll figure it out later.”
