The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has undertaken a new research project focusing on the unique challenges faced by women truck drivers and the obstacles that deter women from pursuing a career in this field.

This comprehensive study aims to not only highlight the issues faced by women in the industry but also propose strategies to overcome these obstacles.

Recent ATRI studies have revealed that only 8.1% of all truck drivers in the U.S. are women, with a mere 2.7% working as over-the-road truck drivers. Recognizing the significance of this disparity, the ATRI Research Advisory Committee has prioritized this women-centric research initiative at their Annual Meeting in 2023.

Key Components of the Research:

  1. Understanding the Female Driver Perspective
National surveys and focus groups will give voice to women who are veteran truck drivers, new entrants, and former truck drivers. The research will address both challenges and motivations for women considering a career in trucking.
  2. Championing Best Practices
The organization will survey and interview motor carriers with a significant number of women drivers to identify the most effective strategies for recruiting and retaining women in the industry. The research will also engage with women executives at motor carriers to explore opportunities beyond truck driving.
  3. Empowering Future Women Drivers
Collaborating with truck driver training schools, the research aims to uncover distinctive issues and training challenges faced by women. This will help the organization develop targeted recruitment and training solutions.

ATRI Research Analyst, Abbigail Huffman, will lead this groundbreaking research and invites industry stakeholders who wish to participate in this project to contact her at [email protected].
