At DeliveryCon 2023, the Black Fleet Network (BFN) held a panel discussion that brought to light the importance of diversity in fleet management and its impact on success.

Exavious Farley, CEO and Founder of BFN, stressed the vital connection between workforce diversity and operational efficiency in today’s fast-paced business world.

Joining Farley on stage were industry experts Dr. Tyra Jones, Devon Biglow from ZEVX, and Lora Dunton from J3 Management Group. Together, they strongly advocated for the role of diversity in driving organizational achievement.

Using a powerful analogy, Biglow compared a diverse workforce to a well-rounded football team, emphasizing the value of a variety of talents and perspectives in achieving collective triumph.

“You can’t have a team full of quarterbacks and expect to win the game,” Biglow said. “You need people of a variety of backgrounds.”

Expanding on this thought, Dr. Jones emphasized the vital role of diverse skill sets in driving organizational growth.

“You need a diverse skillset. You can hire a diverse workforce, but if they all have the same skills, it’s not going to be helpful,” Dr. Jones said. “There is an opportunity when an employee excels to cultivate an environment for the progressive advancement of skills.”

Dunton emphasized the importance of recognizing and developing existing skills in job applicants. She stressed the profound impact that cultivating these abilities within a company can have.

Drawing from her own recruitment success story, Dunton revealed how she discovered and nurtured impressive customer service skills in an individual with a background in fast food. This example highlighted the untapped potential in unconventional candidates.

“Build on the skills employees already have,” Dunton said. “Solid customer service, for example. Build up the next generation.”

Biglow also shared his personal journey and highlighted the importance of mentorship in developing talent. With his diverse professional experience, including customer service, retail, and entertainment, Biglow emphasized how mentorship was instrumental in his success in the fleet management sector.

During the panel discussion, there was a strong emphasis on the need for self-reflection and continuous improvement within organizations. Dr. Jones specifically recommended conducting a comprehensive SWOT analysis to assess current processes and adapt to the changing demands of the industry.

As the discussion came to a close, Dr. Jones imparted valuable hiring advice.

“Ask what they are passionate about,” she said, noting that information can go a long way toward nurturing their growth and finding a role they will be successful with. That human connection is needed.

A the panel highlighted the crucial need for a culture of belonging and accountability in the workplace.

The key takeaway from the BFN panel is clear: diversity is not just a trendy buzzword. It is a powerful driver of innovation, resilience, and success within the ever-changing world of fleet management.
