Senate Bill 174 was approved by the New Mexico State Senate by a vote of 33 to 5. Sen. George Munoz’s bill would require semi trucks to stay in the right lane, with the intent to reduce traffic slow downs. The exception would be “a truck tractor attached to a freight trailer operated on the interstate highway system and outside the boundaries of a municipality shall drive in the right-hand lane except when overtaking another vehicle or approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle or a recovery or repair vehicle displaying flashing emergency or hazard lights.” Failure to comply would result in a $200 fine. The bill is set to move forward to the House.
