Kenworth Launches the New Generation T680E Battery-Electric Truck

Kenworth has revealed its next-generation T680E battery-electric truck, showcasing exceptional advancements in zero-emission vehicle technology. The latest addition to their robust powertrain lineup features an all-new PACCAR ePowertrain and driver-centric innovations.

A Purpose-Built Battery-Electric Platform

“Our engineering team has tirelessly developed a PACCAR-integrated battery-electric platform entirely from scratch,” said Kevin Haygood, assistant general manager for sales and marketing. “This comprehensive approach allows us to offer a truck and powertrain combination for every task, meeting customer needs in range, performance, reliability, and ease of service.”

This evolution in electric vehicle design positions Kenworth as a leader in providing reliable and efficient solutions for various industries that demand environmentally friendly transportation options.

Innovations in the T680E Design

The new T680E introduces state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology, a refined exterior, and advanced in-cab systems. According to a Kenworth press release, it is joined by the revolutionary Kenworth T880E, noted as the first vocational Class 8 battery-electric vehicle in the industry.

Key highlights of the T680E include a PACCAR ePowertrain delivering 365-470 horsepower continuous power, with peak outputs reaching up to 605 hp and 1,850 lb.-ft of torque. “The central drive eMotor and redesigned architecture support greater battery capacity, accelerated charging times, enhanced wheelbase customization, and improved drivability,” stated Joe Adams, Kenworth’s chief engineer. “This fulfills the promise of what we call ‘The Driver’s Truck.'”

Customizable Battery Configurations

The T680E provides three customizable battery-string configurations to suit diverse customer needs based on range, horsepower, and vehicle weight. The largest configuration includes a 500 kWh battery, enabling a range of over 200 miles and supporting up to an impressive 82,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

Equipped with CCS1 DC fast charging capabilities, the T680E boasts an industry-leading 350 kWh peak charge rate. This allows the truck to charge up to 90% in approximately two hours, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum operational efficiency.

Designed for a range of commercial applications such as short-haul, regional-haul, less-than-truckload (LTL), and drayage operations, the T680E is available as a day cab, either as a tractor or straight truck, with a 6×4 axle configuration.

Enhanced Serviceability and Safety

Adams further explained that their all-new PACCAR-integrated design enhances the serviceability of the truck. “We’ve improved access to the Master Service Disconnects for enhanced safety, boosted uptime, and ensured compatibility with our DAVIE service tool for troubleshooting and diagnostics,” he said.

The T680E’s aerodynamic refinements, standard LED headlights featuring blue accents, and signature blue Kenworth badge give the model a distinctive presence on the road.

Innovative Interior Features

Inside the cab, the T680E is equipped with a cutting-edge digital interface, offering drivers detailed battery-electric vehicle (BEV) insights such as range, regenerative braking status, and overall performance. A 15-inch DriverConnect touchscreen display enhances operational control alongside advanced safety features through optional Kenworth ADAS packages, including DigitalVision Mirrors, Bendix Fusion systems, and Lane Keeping Assist.

A Commitment to Sustainable Solutions

“Kenworth is committed to delivering solutions for every customer need, and the Next Generation BEV platform is the latest addition to an industry-leading lineup of powertrain offerings,” Haygood said. “From clean diesel engines, such as the MX-11 and MX-13, to MX-13 CARB low NOx-compliant clean diesel, and the industry’s first X15N natural gas engine, Kenworth matches fleets with the powertrain solutions needed to meet their operational needs.”

The next-generation Kenworth T680E and T880E are now available for order through Kenworth dealers across the United States and Canada, with customer deliveries anticipated later this year. These trucks represent a significant leap forward in zero-emission technology, providing a future-ready solution for businesses prioritizing sustainability and operational efficiency.
