In June 2025, the rugged terrain of Madras, Oregon, became the backdrop for an extraordinary gathering of drivers and enthusiasts. The 2025 Western Star Star Nation Experience brought together six vocational operators and two American Truck Simulator (ATS) gamers from across the U.S. and Canada for a unique blend of competition, camaraderie, and celebration.
The Get-Tough Challenge: Testing Skill and Precision
At the heart of the event was the Get-Tough Challenge, where participants showcased their driving prowess in Western Star 47X and 49X trucks. From navigating the steep inclines of “Mount Madras” to executing precise gravel spreads in the rock quarry, each task demanded focus and finesse. The challenge even included a simulator segment, bridging the gap between virtual and real-world driving skills.
For 2024 alum and returning team captain Casey LaDelle, the experience was about more than just the competition:
“You realize the people behind the scenes ARE the Western Star brand, and the trucks are the product of the passion for what they do.”
From Competitors to Mentors
The event also featured returning champions who transitioned from competitors to mentors. 2023 champion Tatiana DeYoung embraced her role as a team captain, eager to share her knowledge and experience:
“I like how I’m able to be a part of their experience and let them know what I know, and then they just take it and apply it however they would like. Because everyone’s different as a driver, and I can already tell my group is going to kill it.”
Her enthusiasm and guidance set the tone for a weekend of learning and growth.
Celebrating the Heart of the Industry
Brand Manager Alex Martin-Banzer emphasized that the Star Nation Experience is about honoring the individuals who drive the vocational industry forward:
“We really look at all the winners that are here as the backbone of the vocational industry, and we want to celebrate them. We want to bring back that camaraderie and that pride in this business.”
This sentiment was reflected throughout the event, from behind-the-scenes factory tours to hands-on demonstrations of Detroit Assurance safety systems. Participants also enjoyed off-road adventures, including fly fishing in the Crooked River and ATV excursions in the Cascades, further strengthening the bonds within the Western Star community.
