Mark your calendars for July 9-15, which is this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is leading an effort to encourage safer driving on America’s roads.
Throughout that week, law enforcement officers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be paying special attention to drivers of commercial motor vehicles and passenger cars who engage in unsafe driving behaviors. They will be pulled over and given a warning or a ticket.
This year, the focus is on speeding, which remains one of the most persistent problems on our roadways and is a well-documented factor in traffic fatalities and injuries.
Last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week resulted in more than 35,000 traffic stops and 26,164 warnings to drivers.
Speeding was the top violation for both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger car drivers. Officers issued 8,586 citations and 7,299 warnings for speeding, violating basic speed law, and driving too fast for conditions.
The goal of the campaign is to identify and deter unsafe driving behavior and encourage positive driving habits. Data shows that traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement help reduce problematic driving behaviors.
Examples of unsafe driver behaviors include speeding, improper lane changes, driving under the influence, distracted driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Stay safe on the roads by obeying traffic laws and avoiding unsafe driving behaviors.
