What started out as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a chaotic crime scene on Friday morning. New York State Trooper Richard Albert was shot in the arm when he approached the passenger side of a vehicle that was pulled over for going over 100 mph. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Nelson Troche, opened fire from the passenger seat before fleeing the scene.
Despite a manhunt, the shooter was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound not far from the scene on Darby Hill Road. He was transferred to Albany Medical Center but was eventually declared dead. The driver of the vehicle, who had fled on foot, was apprehended and taken into custody.
In the midst of all this chaos, one heroic truck driver stepped in to help keep the suspects from getting away.
“There was actually one tractor trailer that did assist our trooper,” Richard Allen, NYS Police Deputy Superintendent says. “He actually pulled in front of into the car so that car didn’t take off.”
After the suspect fled, a search ensued in the nearby woods, with the assistance of K9s and troopers. Thanks to the efforts of all involved, the suspect was located and apprehended.
