Truck Drivers Share the Strangest Things They’ve Seen on the Road After Dark

October has a way of making an empty highway after midnight feel a little different. Long stretches of darkness, headlights catching something at the edge of the road and unexplained lights overhead can turn an ordinary night behind the wheel into a story that sticks around for years.

We recently asked the Truck Drivers USA Facebook community, “What is the strangest thing you have seen while driving late at night that you still cannot quite explain?” The answers included mysterious figures, unusual animals, strange lights and a few sightings that sound perfectly suited for spooky season.

Some had witnesses. Others happened so quickly that the person behind the wheel was left wondering what they had actually seen. Here are some of the stories that stood out.

Strange Figures Along the Highway

A person appearing alongside an otherwise empty highway came up more than once, but several stories had details that made them particularly memorable.

Jason Lockard recalled passing an old man hitchhiking in Utah around 4:30 one morning. About 20 miles later, he passed what appeared to be the exact same man again. He said the experience still creeps him out.

Brian Smith remembered traveling east on I-10 through Lafayette, Louisiana, around 4 a.m. when he noticed a woman standing along the road in a white dress. As he passed, he looked toward her face but could not make out any facial features.

Patricia Handy shared another white-dress sighting from a trip through Montana around 3 a.m. She and David had stopped at a stop sign despite there being no traffic around when what looked like a woman in a white dress appeared to float past them. The fact that they both saw it has kept the experience alive in their conversations years later.

Michael OMcpheron had an encounter while driving a cabover Kenworth through Pennsylvania in the 1980s. Around midnight on Route 22 between Pittsburgh and Breezewood, he spotted what looked like a person standing on the center line while climbing the mountain. He caught the figure through the small window beside the windshield, but other truckers traveling behind him apparently never saw anything.

Lights That Didn’t Look Quite Right

The night sky produced some of the most difficult stories to explain, especially when the lights did not behave like ordinary aircraft.

Joshua Ainsworth remembered seeing a huge triangular craft hovering above the trees along Highway 84 near Fort Rucker, Alabama, in October 1999. He described it as being roughly the size of a football stadium.

Franklin Alen encountered something unusual while traveling I-40 through New Mexico around 3 a.m. with his trainer. Two objects in the sky appeared to move along with the truck, and Franklin kept looking at them until his trainer finally got up to see what had caught his attention. His trainer looked outside, looked back at him, then looked again before simply saying it was “nothing” and returning to the bunk.

Curt Edgerly kept his answer simple, recalling a strange formation of lights in the sky over rural Iowa. Todd Hollingsworth had a different version of the experience, describing orbs of light that seemed to fade in and out rather than behaving like planes, stars or satellites.

Not every unusual light stayed mysterious forever. Allen Gerdes remembered seeing a glowing object moving slowly above the trees in southern Illinois when he was a teenager. He and his friends did not know what they were watching at the time, but he later came to believe they had witnessed ball lightning, an experience he still remembered decades later.

Animals That Made Drivers Look Twice

Wildlife after dark is nothing unusual on the road, but some sightings were harder to put into a familiar category.

Robert Gallegos remembered seeing an enormous white owl near an exit off Interstate 15 around Temecula, California, at approximately 2 a.m. He estimated that the bird stood about three feet tall.

Tony Reiser had a sighting that became a little easier to explain after a second look. While driving a winding two-lane road, he initially thought he was seeing Ewoks along the route before deciding they were most likely bear cubs.

Rune Johnsen encountered a beaver standing on the highway, with no river or lake anywhere nearby. The animal itself was recognizable, but what it was doing there remained the strange part.

Then there was Chris Tucker, who said he watched a raccoon throw a grocery basket into the middle of the road. He was less confused about what he had seen than he was about why the raccoon seemed so angry.

A Bigfoot Sighting With an Unexpected Explanation

One response had all the makings of a classic roadside mystery until the next morning provided an answer.

Brandon Mathews was crossing Snoqualmie Pass during the winter of 2015 at about 2 a.m. when he saw what appeared to be Bigfoot walking alongside the highway. He said he was not someone who believed in legends or myths, but he was certain of what he had seen.

The explanation came the following day. According to Brandon, locals told him police had been looking for a man who had been dressing as Bigfoot in public.

It may have taken the mystery out of the sighting, but seeing a Bigfoot costume walking beside a mountain highway at 2 a.m. probably did not make the original encounter feel any less strange.

Some Road Stories Never Get an Answer

That was the common thread running through many of the responses. A strange figure might disappear before there is time for a second look, lights can be gone before anyone figures out what they were, and something caught briefly in the headlights can become a story retold for decades.

October gives those stories a fitting time to resurface. Whether the explanation was wildlife, unusual weather, someone in a Bigfoot costume or something that remains a mystery, plenty of people in the TDUSA community have at least one late-night story they have never forgotten.
