Bradley-Edwards-SquareBradley Edwards, a truck driver from Athens, AL, has been recognized by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) as a Highway Angel. Edwards, who works for Carter Express Inc in Anderson, IN, is being celebrated for his role in rescuing a badly injured truck driver after a tanker truck crashed in front of him on May 3, 2023.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. while Edwards was driving northbound on I-65 in Cullman, AL, when Edwards witnessed a tanker truck crash before his eyes.

“I saw dirt go flying up and I knew it was a tanker,” Edwards said. “First thing I thought was, ‘Oh, this thing is gonna explode.’”

After pulling over to help, Edwards quickly realized the truck was leaking fuel. Thankfully, another passerby stopped and handed Edwards a crowbar, which he immediately used to break the back glass of the tractor so he and the other motorist could get the driver out of the mangled vehicle.  Despite the danger, Edwards remained determined to rescue the victim in need.

“We carried him up to the side of the road and an ambulance was there within minutes,” Edwards said. “He was messed up bad — his arm was all messed up.”

The injured truck driver was taken to the hospital by emergency rescue vehicles.

Edwards, an experienced trucker of eight years and Air Force veteran, was left covered in blood with glass in his hands. Despite the danger, he fearlessly stepped up to assist the injured driver without hesitation.

“When you see something like that and you can help, you should be able to stop,” Edwards said.
