On Dec. 15, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced the reinstatement of the PowerTrucks ELD to its Registered ELDs list. Initially removed on Dec. 1 along with nine other devices, it now joins the CI ELD Logs device by CV Options LLC as the second ELD to be reinstated after the CI ELD Logs was restored on Dec. 8. The FMCSA had initially placed these ELDs on the Revoked Devices list citing the providers’ failure to meet the minimum requirements outlined in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A, which delineates functional specifications for ELDs.
This recent development allows drivers using the PowerTrucks ELD or CI ELD Logs device to resume their use, eliminating the need to revert to paper logs or alternate logging software. This is a positive outcome for carriers and drivers relying on these specific ELDs.
The significance of this reinstatement extends beyond individual devices, emphasizing the broader importance of safety within the trucking industry. ELDs play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with regulations and enhancing overall safety measures.
As the industry evolves, maintaining high safety standards remains a top priority. For carriers affected by the initial revocation of other ELDs, they now have a 60-day window to transition back to paper logs and determine a suitable replacement if their devices are not reinstated. This underscores the critical role that ELDs play in upholding safety protocols and regulatory compliance within the trucking sector.
