A new truck parking facility planned for Interstate 49 in Crawford County, Arkansas, will have room for approximately 130 trucks following the award of a $23 million federal grant.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation received the funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s INFRA program. The money will cover final design and construction of the rest area between the Gun Club Road and Clear Creek Road interchanges along future I-49. Plans also include parking for 50 passenger vehicles.
Arkansas Trucking Association Welcomes Funding
The Arkansas Trucking Association praised the announcement and credited U.S. Rep. Steve Womack for advocating for dedicated truck parking funds in federal transportation legislation.
Association President Shannon Newton said the project addressed a concern that directly affected professional drivers.
“Safe, accessible truck parking is not a convenience for our industry,” Newton said. “It is essential that drivers have a safe place to get meaningful rest.”
Newton also said Womack’s efforts would benefit highway safety and support Arkansas’s freight transportation network.
Project Part of Broader Truck Parking Investment
Arkansas was among 12 states selected to receive federal funding for truck parking projects.
The announcement came as the trucking industry continued to push for additional parking capacity nationwide. According to the American Trucking Associations, approximately one parking space is available for every 11 truck drivers, leaving many searching for a place to stop as their available driving hours run out.
The Crawford County facility will add designated spaces along the I-49 corridor, although officials have not announced a construction start date or an anticipated opening.
