In an effort to bolster road safety, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced an intensified enforcement campaign across major highways from August 6-8. This initiative, named SafeDRIVE, represents a collaborative endeavor between the Texas Highway Patrol and law enforcement agencies from adjacent states. The targeted interstates for this operation include I-10, I-20, I-35, I-40, and I-45.

The primary objective of SafeDRIVE is to lower the incidence of accidents involving commercial motor vehicles (CMV) by boosting the presence of law enforcement in areas recognized as critical for safety. This proactive approach will encompass monitoring both passenger and commercial vehicles. The enforcement will focus on various infractions such as aggressive driving, speeding, tailgating, non-compliance with seatbelt laws, distracted driving, and driving under the influence. Moreover, CMV operators will be scrutinized to ensure they comply with industry regulations.

Important Safety Recommendations from DPS

To enhance road safety for all motorists, the DPS suggests the following precautions:

  • Be Aware of Blind Spots: Large vehicles often have considerable blind spots, so remain vigilant.
  • Safe Passing Practices: Make sure you can see the CMV driver in their side mirror before you pass. Always signal and ensure you have ample room.
  • Avoid Cutting Off Large Vehicles: Large trucks need significant distance to stop, often equivalent to two football fields.
  • Steer Clear of Tailgating: Following too closely can put you in the truck’s blind spot and increase the risk of accidents.
  • Always Buckle Your Seatbelt: Wearing a seatbelt is crucial for your safety and can be life-saving in emergencies.
  • Stay Off Your Phone: Remember, texting while driving is against the law in Texas.

Troopers are urging all drivers to take part in sharing the road responsibly and to stay alert in order to ensure safer travel for everyone. Your driving behavior not only impacts your safety but also the well-being of fellow road users. Use these tips to contribute to a safer and more secure driving experience on Texas highways.
