Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Removes 14 ELDs From Registered List

FMCSA has removed 14 electronic logging devices from its registered list for failing to meet federal requirements. Carriers must replace affected ELDs with compliant devices by May 4, 2026.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has removed 14 electronic logging devices from its list of registered ELDs, placing them on the agency’s Revoked Devices list.

According to the agency, the devices failed to meet minimum requirements outlined in Title 49 CFR Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395.

“Meeting federal requirements isn’t optional,” said Derek Barrs, FMCSA administrator. “If a device falls short, it will be removed. We enforce the standard fairly and firmly because safety depends on it.”

What Happens Next

Motor carriers using any of the revoked devices have up to 60 days to transition to compliant ELDs listed on the Registered Devices list. The deadline to replace affected units is May 4, 2026.

Until that date, enforcement guidance instructs safety officials not to cite violations under 395.8(a)(1) for “No record of duty status” or 395.22(a) for “Failing to use a registered ELD” solely due to use of one of the revoked devices. Instead, officials are advised to review paper logs, logging software, or use the ELD display as a backup to verify hours-of-service data.

Beginning May 4, 2026, continued use of a revoked device will be treated as operating without a compliant ELD. At that point, drivers may be cited under 395.8(a)(1) and placed out of service in accordance with Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance criteria.

If an ELD provider corrects identified deficiencies, the agency may restore the device to the registered list and notify the industry of the update.
