Independent California truckers scramble after Supreme Court refuses to hear AB5

A law designed for gig-economy companies such as Uber and Lyft forcing them to accept workers as employees is having an impact on the trucking industry as well. The new AB5 legislation is designed to create more workplace protections for employees, but this might not be the case for truck drivers that own and operate their own. CBS News reported that on, “Thursday, June 28, the U.S. Supreme Court made news again, this time by refusing to hear a challenge by California truckers to the new law that requires truck drivers to be employees of the trucking companies they do business with”.

Many were caught off guard by this news. Those who bought their trucks very recently are even more hurt by it. Many who have individual trucks are going to become useless unless drivers want to become their own trucking companies. Because of this, it is predicted that many will want to leave California, adding to our never-ending supply chain problems. Click here to learn more on how the legislation is creating an impact.
