Iowa 80 Celebrates 60 Years of Serving Professional Drivers

Iowa 80 Truckstop

The Iowa 80 Truckstop is commemorating its remarkable 60th consecutive year of service to professional truck drivers and other travelers. Founded by entrepreneur Bill Moon, who had a deep connection with drivers, the truck stop has evolved into a comprehensive facility over the decades.

With its roots as a modest establishment with six diesel pumps and a 50-seat restaurant at what is now Exit 284, Bill Moon’s vision took shape before the completion of Interstate 80. Managing the truck stop since 1965, Moon’s commitment led to significant expansions and the establishment of Truckomat Truck Washes and CAT Scale Company.

In 1984, seizing an opportunity, Moon and his wife, Carolyn, who had managed the facility for nearly two decades, acquired Iowa 80. Over the years, the Moon Family has overseen 32 expansions and remodels, transforming Iowa 80 into a second-generation family endeavor.

Today, Iowa 80 is a multifaceted destination catering to diverse needs. The facility includes a gift store, the Super Truck Showroom, a dentist, barber shop, chiropractor, workout room, laundry facilities, a 60-seat movie theater, a trucker’s TV lounge, 24 private showers, and a variety of restaurant options such as Iowa 80 Kitchen, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Einstein Bagels, Caribou Coffee, Blimpie, and Chester’s Chicken. Additional amenities encompass a convenience store, custom embroidery and vinyl shop, 42 BP-branded gas and diesel fueling positions, a seven-bay truck service center, a three-bay Truckomat truck wash, a CAT Scale, a Dogomat Pet Wash, and the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum.

An annual highlight is the Walcott Truckers Jamboree held each July, attracting a record 56,000 attendees last year—a testament to Iowa 80’s commitment to celebrating America’s truckers.

“It is really amazing to have reached this milestone,” said Delia Moon Meier, senior vice president.  “We are so fortunate to have such wonderful, dedicated employees and loyal customers.”
