The Louisiana Motor Transport Association (LMTA) recently announced Nelson Landry as the 2023 Louisiana Truck Driver of the Year. South Louisiana Community College’s Landry is honored for his impressive driving record this year as well as his contributions to safe trucking practices in the state.

Landry has been recognized for his hard work and contributions to the field of transportation. Nominated by South Louisiana Community College (SLCC), where he serves as lead examiner, this veteran commercial driver was granted a license nearly three decades ago in 1992. Since then, Landry has driven over 3 million miles without incident – an impressive feat!

During his professional years behind the wheel, Landry went above and beyond by once braving a hurricane threat while entering Florida with trucks full of generators for radio stations and hospitals during an evacuation – risking it all just to make sure people were safe. His ambition has made him an inspirational figure who is never afraid of lending others a hand when they are most vulnerable. After retiring from the driver’s seat, his commitment to help others is still going strong.

Drawing on his extensive experience in the trucking industry, Landry has made a lasting impact by sharing his knowledge with students at SLCC. By offering instruction to future drivers and preparing them for life as part of the workforce, he is helping cultivate an influx of talent into this important sector.

As the 2023 Louisiana Truck Driver of the Year, Landry will grace the cover of Open Road magazine and billboards across their state during September to celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.
