Mariusz “Mario” Tyszuk, a truck driver from Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been recognized as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) for his selfless actions. Tyszuk, who works for Bison Transport, came to the rescue of a couple after their SUV crashed on the highway near Denton, TX.
On the morning of July 19, 2023, Tyszuk was driving on I-35 south near Denton, TX. As he traveled along, he witnessed an accident unfold – a SUV on the opposite lane lost control, became airborne, and rolled over before coming to a rest on its passenger side.
“I was able to pull over safely and immediately ran across the highway to help,” Tyszuk said. “Upon arrival at the vehicle, I saw that both occupants were trapped inside. Although the windshield was cracked, it was still intact. I was able to punch my way through a corner of it enough to loosen it. I was then able to remove it.”
Tyszuk, a native of Poland, immediately sprang into action to rescue the male driver from the wreckage. He then rushed to aid the passenger, the driver’s wife, who was lying on her side. As he worked to extract her from the vehicle, he discovered she was bleeding profusely from a deep gash on her leg.
“I immediately took off my t-shirt, ripped it up and created a tourniquet for her leg,” he said.
As the injured woman lay bleeding, Tyszuk applied constant pressure to the wound in an attempt to staunch the flow. Thankfully, while his attention was on the couple, more good samaritans pulled over and dialed emergency services. Tyszuk, determined to keep the victim conscious and at ease, reassured them in their time of distress.
Amidst the chaos, the couple’s beloved dog managed to escape the wreckage. Their anxiety grew as they worried what might have happened to their furry companion. Unbeknownst to them, Tyszuk had witnessed the dog get struck by another vehicle during the accident. Choosing to shield them from this heart-wrenching detail, he kept silent.
A nurse on her way to work also stopped to help. Armed with a trusty first aid kit, she expertly bandaged the wound, while Tyszuk steadfastly continued applying pressure. The minutes ticked by, but their resolve never wavered. After about 20 minutes that felt like an eternity, the sound of sirens pierced the air – the ambulance had arrived to take over the care of the victims.
“There’s nothing more important in our lives than to help someone in need,” Tyszuk said. “I cannot imagine how I could go by and not help.”
