Michigan Lifts All Truck Weight Restrictions Starting Friday Morning

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that starting at 6 a.m. on Friday, May 9, all seasonal weight restrictions on state trunkline highways will be lifted for the 2025 season. These highways are typically identified with M, I, or US designations.

Seasonal weight restrictions are usually enforced during the spring frost thaw to protect roads from damage but are now officially concluded for the year.

While MDOT oversees state trunkline highways, county road commissions and city public works departments manage their own seasonal weight restrictions. These may not always align with MDOT’s restrictions. Drivers are advised to look for posted signs indicating whether specific routes have active weight limits.

To stay informed, truckers can access MDOT’s weight restriction updates by calling 800-787-8960 or visiting www.Michigan.gov/Truckers under the “Restrictions” section. The MDOT Truck Operators Map, which shows all-season routes marked in green and gold, is also available online. Drivers can subscribe to email alerts through the MDOT website for regular updates.

For trucking companies operating out of New Jersey or Canada, further information is available by calling 517-373-6256.
