May marks National Military Appreciation Month, and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is gearing up to honor veterans and active-duty service members.

For the last 17 years, OOIDA’s Truckers For Troops campaign, held during the week leading up to Veterans Day, has been critical in raising funds for veteran organizations and putting together care packages for U.S. troops stationed overseas.

This year, OOIDA is expanding its efforts with “Mission: Military Appreciation,” a two-week initiative, to extend its support to those who have served our nation.

The campaign, scheduled from May 6 to May 19, offers truckers the opportunity to join or renew their OOIDA membership at a discounted rate of $35, which is $10 off the standard annual dues. Ten percent of this amount will directly contribute to the Truckers For Troops fund, with a match from OOIDA.

“While our annual Truckers For Troops campaign has always been near and dear to our hearts, we realized the appreciation truckers have for active and retired service members isn’t a once-a-year feel-good mission,” said Norita Taylor, OOIDA director of public relations. “It just made sense to celebrate Military Appreciation Month to say ‘thank you’ from truckers once again.”

All proceeds generated during the Truckers For Troops campaign are used to aid veterans and active-duty military personnel. This support includes donations to organizations like the Veterans Community Project, and the creation of care packages dispatched to troops stationed overseas.

These care packages, which are 18-by-16-by-14 inches and weigh approximately 70 pounds, are packed with essentials and treats designed to uplift troops’ spirits. From practical items like socks to recreational goodies such as squirt guns and silly string, each package is carefully curated. OOIDA’s dedicated volunteer employees handle all aspects of packing and shipping to maximize the impact of every dollar raised.

Family or friends of U.S. military members deployed abroad who wish to receive a care package can send package addresses to [email protected], being sure to include the expected return date.

Since its beginning in 2007, the Truckers For Troops campaign has amassed over $800,000 in contributions to support veterans and active-duty personnel, highlighting OOIDA’s commitment to honoring and assisting those who serve.

To participate, individuals can contact OOIDA at 816-229-5791 or visit OOIDA.com between May 6 and May 20 to sign up or renew their membership.
