Oregon commercial driver applicants will see significant updates to the CDL testing process beginning Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has introduced a revised Commercial Driver Manual, updated knowledge test questions, and new CDL skills test material.
According to the DMV, these updates affect the scoresheet, vehicle inspection checklist, pamphlet, and CDL examiner manual. The examiner manual is designed to guide applicants through the licensing, knowledge, and skills testing process and is not a substitute for an entry-level driver training program.
Key Changes to CDL Skills Testing
The updated test questions include enhancements to vehicle inspection and Basic Control Skills maneuvers, which are critical components of the CDL skills test.
- Vehicle Inspection: Drivers are tested on their ability to identify potential mechanical issues, ensuring vehicles are safe to operate.
- Basic Control Skills: Maneuvers like backing, turning, and stopping are evaluated to confirm drivers can safely control their commercial vehicle in different situations.
These updates bring Oregon’s CDL knowledge test in line with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ modernized CDL test, which emphasizes current technology and safety standards for commercial drivers.
Transition Period for Examiners and Applicants
Both DMV and third-party examiners can use either the current or updated test materials through June 1, 2026. However, applicants with banked scores from the current test may encounter limited availability of examiners offering the older test as Oregon fully transitions to the updated format, the DMV notes.
Drivers preparing for their CDL should review the new manual and test materials to ensure they are ready for the updated vehicle inspection and skills assessments.
