Pittsburgh is hosting the American Trucking Associations’ 2026 National Truck Driving Championships this week, bringing together 429 of the nation’s top professional truck drivers to compete for national titles at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Often referred to as the “Super Bowl of Safety,” the annual competition recognizes professional drivers with outstanding safety records while testing the knowledge and driving skills required to compete at the national level.
According to the American Trucking Associations, the 429 competitors have collectively logged more than 774 million accident-free miles. Drivers qualified for the championships by winning their respective state competitions and maintaining at least one year of accident-free driving.
Drivers Compete in Three Phases
The National Truck Driving Championships evaluate competitors through three separate challenges designed to measure both knowledge and practical driving ability.
Drivers first complete a written examination before moving to a timed pre-trip vehicle inspection. The competition concludes with a driving skills course that requires participants to navigate an unfamiliar truck through a series of precision obstacles.
Jason Wing, a member of the National Truck Driving Championships committee, said the driving course is often the most anticipated part of the competition because it tests a driver’s judgment and vehicle control.
Competitors must maneuver within inches of barriers without making contact, demonstrating depth perception, precision and the ability to accurately judge the dimensions of a commercial vehicle.
Celebrating Safe Professional Drivers
Wing said the championships also recognize the professionalism displayed by drivers throughout the year, noting that the competition highlights those who consistently operate safely while sharing the road with the public.
The event continues through Friday, when national champions in each vehicle class will be crowned during the awards ceremony.
According to the American Trucking Associations, the National Truck Driving Championships will return to Pittsburgh in 2028.
