The American truck driver deals with daily problems and setbacks. Some of these are covid related, low wages, long hours & time away from home and family. Now, they are dealing with the Canadian shut down causing more supply chain issues. Many long-drivers have left the field for other industries due these working conditions. Trucking, for obvious reasons, is a dangerous job. Turnover rate averages 96% for larger companies and 73% for smaller companies according to the American Trucking Associations.
Many drivers sign contracts to pay back necessary training costs with trucking companies through driving for that company. If they do not continue to drive for that company, the cost for the expensive training must be paid by the trucker to the company leading to high debt rates. The Biden administration announced an action plan to improve the US trucking workforce last year.
