There’s a major shift coming to New York City’s Hunts Point: trucks are going electric, and it’s being called the “Bronx Is Breathing” initiative. The goal? Cut diesel emissions and bring job opportunities to the local community—right in one of the busiest food distribution hubs in America.

A big part of this push is building an electric charging depot at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. Picture a facility with 32 fast chargers—8 of them set up for large Class 8 trucks—and room for smaller EVs, electric bikes, and scooters as well. This hub, backed by NYCEDC and developed by MN8 Energy, even includes a training center to help the community learn green‑tech jobs.

Mack Trucks is already on the ground, delivering its first LR Electric refuse truck to Royal Waste Services. That truck comes with:

A 376 kWh battery (42% more energy and longer range than older versions)

Twin electric motors delivering 448 hp and 4,051 lb‑ft torque from zero RPM

Regenerative braking and fast charging using a standard 150 kW SAE J1772 connector

“This delivery represents more than just a new vehicle,” explained Mack Trucks North America President Jonathan Randall. “It’s a tangible step toward advancing sustainable transportation and demonstrates how the transportation industry can support community environmental goals. The Mack LR Electric offers zero‑emission operation while providing Royal Waste Services with a reliable solution for its operations.”

Royal Waste Services’ district manager, Michael Angelo Reali, added:

“Integrating this zero-emission Mack LR Electric into our fleet demonstrates that electric refuse collection can be both operationally effective and environmentally responsible.”
“This partnership with Mack Trucks and the broader Bronx Is Breathing initiative allows us to serve the Hunts Point community while reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the transition to cleaner transportation solutions.”

Later this year, Volvo Trucks North America plans to add four Class 7 VNR Electric trucks—plus refrigerated EV units—for City Harvest food rescue operations, all charging at the new Hunts Point hub.

Development is expected to get going in 2026. When it’s complete, the hub will support heavy trucks, vans, e-bikes, and more. Trucker tech and community training will go hand in hand, making this a rare combo of sustainable freight and local economic investment.

For drivers, this signals a bigger trend: electrification is coming to urban routes where operational stops and starts match EV strengths. Advanced trucks like the Mack LR Electric are already proving that they can juggle performance, range, and reliability—especially in tight urban settings.

Volvo Trucks North America has earned the prestigious Red Dot Award for its groundbreaking design of the all-new Volvo VNL, emphasizing the brand’s ability to merge aesthetics, innovation, and functionality in the trucking industry.

“When most people hear design, they think of automotive or fashion, not heavy-duty trucks. However, for our team, design plays a critical role in everything from fuel efficiency to driver comfort,” shared Brian Balicki, head of design at Volvo Trucks North America. “With the all-new Volvo VNL, we started with a blank sheet of paper and reimagined the truck from the ground up. The streamlined, wedge-shaped cab and dramatically sloped windshield are not just visually striking, they reduce aerodynamic drag and help deliver up to 10% better fuel efficiency compared to the legacy model. Inside, we transformed the driving environment and sleeper into a space that feels more like a home away from home.”

Cutting-edge redesign and features

Revealed in January 2024, the all-new Volvo VNL represents six years of intensive research and represents a complete rethinking of the long-haul truck. With a nearly 90% redesign from its predecessors, the truck offers enhanced productivity, safety, profitability, and sustainability, addressing the demands of the North American freight transport sector.

The Volvo VNL is visually distinguished by its dynamic lines, aerodynamic efficiency, and innovative wedge-shaped profile. Its curved windshield reduces drag, while the angled front grille, headlights, and intakes enhance both form and function. Volvo described this design as “a significant industry shift” that exemplifies its brand strengths.

Inside the cabin, driver-focused features fuel innovation. An all-new 24-volt electrical system hosts technologies like dynamic displays, a Camera Monitor System, inductive charging, and task/ambient lighting. Comfort is redefined with customizable cab configurations, upgraded materials, and amenities like versatile bunk setups and airline-inspired window shades designed to meet drivers’ needs.

Revolutionizing the driver experience

“The all-new Volvo VNL was designed to change everything for heavy-duty trucks, and we evaluated every detail of the driver experience from selecting materials that provide a premium look and feel to incorporating innovative safety features that help protect drivers in case of an accident,” remarked Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Winning this prestigious design award validates the six years of dedication that went into transforming our flagship VNL model. We created a vehicle that not only connects with customers but also delivers exceptional performance and comfort.”

The design innovations are aimed at creating a driver experience that reflects their needs on the road, earning praise from drivers and the broader trucking industry along the way.

About the Red Dot Award

The Red Dot Design Award is a globally celebrated mark of recognition, honoring exceptional design across industries. Originating in Essen, Germany over 70 years ago, it spans 51 categories, including vehicles, electronics, household goods, and more.

As the industry turns a corner toward sustainability, two names dominate the electric semi conversation: Freightliner’s eCascadia and the Tesla Semi. Both aim to shake up the world of heavy-duty trucking—but do they actually deliver for real OTR drivers, or is it all just marketing noise?

Let’s break down the specs, real-world performance, and what it all means for drivers navigating the future.

Power & Performance

Tesla Semi

Motors: Three independent electric motors

Horsepower: Over 1,000 HP

Torque: Not officially listed, but designed for max hauling power

Acceleration: 0–60 mph in 20 seconds with a full 80,000 lbs

Uphill: Can maintain highway speeds on a 5% grade

Freightliner eCascadia

Motors: Single or dual electric motor setup

Horsepower: 320 to 470 HP

Torque: Up to 23,000 lb-ft (dual motor config)

Acceleration: Tuned for local and regional routes

Speed: Highway-capable, not performance-focused

If you’re running regional loads, eCascadia’s specs are more than enough. For long-haul power and highway-grade climbs, the Tesla Semi edges out.

Range & Charging

Tesla Semi

Battery: ~800–900 kWh

Range: Up to 500 miles per charge

Charging: 1 MW DC fast charging (70% in 30 minutes)

eCascadia

Battery: 291–438 kWh

Range: 155 to 230 miles

Charging: 80% in around 90 minutes (depending on setup)

Tesla’s longer range puts it in a better position for long-haul and OTR drivers. But range isn’t the only factor—charging infrastructure still makes or breaks electric truck viability.

Real-World Use & Field Data

Tesla Semi has proven itself under pressure. In NACFE’s Run on Less – Electric Depot, Tesla Semis were clocking over 1,000 miles in a single day, with daily averages of around 923 km (574 miles).

Freightliner’s eCascadia is already in the wild. Reyes Coca-Cola added 29 to its fleet and reported cleaner operations, reliable power, and quieter rides.

Both trucks have clear use cases—eCascadia for regional distribution, and Tesla Semi for longer linehauls.

Support, Availability & Infrastructure

Tesla Semi

Limited initial rollout

Mass production expected by late 2025

Megacharger network still in development

Maintenance and service hubs still ramping up

eCascadia

Already in production and fleet use

Uses industry-standard CCS fast charging

Supported by Freightliner’s national dealer network

If you’re trying to electrify a fleet today, Freightliner wins on availability and support. But Tesla’s rollout could make waves by next year.

So—Is It the Future, or Just Hype?

The future’s not hype—it’s here. But not every route is ready for it.

Tesla Semi is the better pick for OTR and long-haul applications—once charging and service infrastructure catch up.

Freightliner eCascadia is ideal for fleets doing regional or last-mile freight and looking to cut emissions now.

Electrification isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s a spectrum—and both of these trucks bring something legit to the table.

A truck’s performance goes beyond specs; it’s about the real-world work it can handle. That’s exactly what Shell aims to showcase with its Starship 3.0. Thomas Mueller, Shell’s General Manager of Commercial Road Transport, highlighted the company’s mission to test its innovations in real scenarios during an event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Shell Starship 3.0 Driving Change in IndyCar

Building on the collaboration between Shell and IndyCar, the Shell Starship 3.0 will serve as the official transporter for the Pennzoil Tech Inspection trailer throughout the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series. “The truck’s not going to be on the track, but it’s going to do the job from track to track,” said Mueller.

Powered by the Cummins X15N natural gas engine and Shell Rotella natural gas engine oil, Starship 3.0 is the first natural gas-powered Class 8 truck in North America’s motorsports fleets. Its innovative features include a lightweight, aerodynamic carbon fiber body, a camera-based mirror system, and an optimized lightweight chassis.

Since 2023, Shell has also supplied 100% renewable racing fuel to the IndyCar series, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability within motorsports.

Validating Energy-Efficient Trucking

Mike Roeth, Executive Director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, called the Starship 3.0 “probably the most efficient, best natural gas, Class 8 truck in America.” The truck achieved fuel efficiency of approximately 9 mpg Diesel Gallon Equivalent (DGE) with a range of 890 miles during West Coast runs with renewable natural gas.

“Proving runs like this are vital to growing natural gas infrastructure,” added Mueller.

AI-Powered Sustainability Insights

To further its sustainability goals, Shell is rolling out an AI-driven emissions management platform developed with NTT Data. The tool provides real-time tracking and analysis of race operations and logistics emissions.

Kunal Koul of NTT underscored the platform’s potential, explaining how it shifts from using estimated data to real, actionable insights. “This system not only enables emissions tracking but also equips teams to make more data-driven decisions through intuitive dashboards and reports,” he said.

A United Drive Toward Sustainability

Austin, Texas-based ReVolt Motors, a newcomer focused on reducing emissions in the trucking industry, is set to showcase its groundbreaking diesel-electric hybrid retrofit of the Peterbilt 379 at the upcoming Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Kentucky. Their innovative hybrid drivetrains aim to merge the best of diesel and electric technologies, offering a fresh alternative to fully battery-electric or hydrogen-powered trucks.

The show truck, designed to meet the evolving needs of American truckers, is equipped with a unique hybrid powertrain system. It features both a diesel engine and an electric motor, allowing drivers to switch seamlessly between diesel for long hauls and electricity for areas with strict emission regulations.

“Drivers should not have to choose between losing their longtime routes because of changing regulatory environments or losing the truck in which they have already made significant investments,” Gardner said. “American truckers want their trucks to reflect their identity, and our retrofit technology allows them to continue driving the trucks they love while still making a living.”

A Hybrid That Runs Like a Diesel Truck

Unlike fully electric trucks, ReVolt’s hybrid system eliminates the burdens of massive battery weights. The system uses a diesel engine and generator to charge the batteries, which then power the electric drivetrain. What does this mean for truckers?

Comparable Range: The truck offers almost the same mileage as a traditional diesel truck. On an all-electric mode—with uses like port operations or areas with strict emissions—it provides a range of approximately 100 miles.

Potent Performance: The hybrid system delivers 670 horsepower and 3,500 lb.-ft. of torque, making the truck as powerful as its diesel-only counterparts.

Heavy-Haul Capability: With a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 130,000 pounds, the retrofitted Peterbilt 379 can handle overweight loads with ease.

Cost-Effective and Environmentally Friendly

One of ReVolt’s primary goals is to make hybrid retrofitting an affordable solution for truckers. While final pricing remains under wraps, the company aims to keep costs comparable to those of a routine “million-mile” overhaul. A new electric semi can cost upwards of $500,000, so retrofitting offers a more accessible path to modernization for owner-operators and fleet managers alike.

Fuel efficiency is where the retrofit shines. ReVolt’s system averages at least 12 MPG in targeted applications, generating 40% fuel savings. It also integrates regenerative braking and an efficient range extender to charge batteries, reducing emissions while maximizing operational efficiency.

The retrofit eliminates the need for a separate auxiliary power unit (APU). Drivers can enjoy nearly unlimited heating and cooling in their sleeper cabins without idling, cutting costs further while reducing potential maintenance issues.

A New Era of Efficiency and Sustainability

ReVolt Motors has positioned its diesel-electric hybrid retrofit technology as a cleaner, more reliable, and cost-effective solution for the changing trucking landscape. By offering a 40% reduction in emissions, increased fuel efficiency, and the ability to reduce dependence on diesel fuel, ReVolt’s retrofit helps drivers and fleets stay ahead in an evolving market.

ReVolt’s ability to combine cutting-edge engineering with practical solutions for truckers is reflected through its innovative technology. The system not only supports environmental goals but also preserves the operational reliability and flexibility truckers need.

See It in Action at MATS

ReVolt Motors is excited to engage with industry professionals at MATS. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the Peterbilt 379 retrofit in person, speak with ReVolt team members, and even schedule a test drive. To arrange a test drive or meeting, email Contact@ReVoltMotors.io.

Mack Trucks is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2025 — 125 years of shaping the transportation industry, one truck at a time. What began in a modest Brooklyn workshop has grown into a globally admired brand known for its grit, innovation, and an unrelenting Bulldog spirit.

A Journey From Local Beginnings to Global Icon

Since its inception in 1900, Mack Trucks has been the power behind the nation’s most significant achievements. From hauling steel for the iconic Brooklyn Bridge in 1909 to playing a key role in building the Hoover Dam, the company helped pave the way for America’s modern infrastructure. “For 125 years, Mack Trucks has been more than just a manufacturer – we’ve been helping to build the American success story,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks.

The Bulldog Spirit

You can’t talk about Mack Trucks without mentioning the Bulldog. The emblem earned its legacy during World War I, where Mack’s AC models were heralded by British soldiers as dependable “bulldogs” under fire. This name stuck, and in 1932, Mack’s Chief Engineer Alfred Fellows Masury sculpted the first Bulldog hood ornament from a bar of soap during a hospital stay. This enduring symbol reflects Mack Trucks’ commitment to rugged durability and reliability.

Milestones in Innovation

Over the past 125 years, Mack Trucks has established itself as a pioneer in the trucking world. Key innovations include:

1920s: Revolutionized integrated powertrains by unifying engines, transmissions, and axles for better performance.

1930s: Introduced power brakes and power-assisted steering.

1953: Launched the Thermodyne engine, setting benchmarks for power efficiency.

2010: Rolled out the mDRIVE automated manual transmission for increased productivity.

2022 and 2023: Proved sustainability is within reach by introducing the zero tailpipe-emission LR Electric refuse truck and expanding with the MD Electric medium-duty truck.

“Each of these innovations represents more than just technological advancement,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “They represent Mack’s dedication to solving real-world challenges for our customers while continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in trucking.”

Honoring Tradition, Driving Forward

Mack Trucks is not only a symbol of American manufacturing excellence but also a brand with a global impact. Its products are sold and serviced in more than 45 countries, with heavy-duty trucks meticulously crafted at the Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) plant in Pennsylvania and medium-duty models produced at the Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO) facility in Virginia.

At the Mack Trucks Historical Museum, visitors can explore how the company’s timeless values endured through decades. “What’s remarkable about Mack’s 125-year journey is how the core values have remained constant even as the technology has evolved,” said Doug Maney, curator of the museum.

Innovating for a Sustainable Future

Mack Trucks is not just reflecting on its past but leading the charge into a more sustainable and innovative future. Electric models like the LR Electric refuse truck and MD Electric series are paving the way for zero-emission fleets in cities nationwide.

“Our 125th anniversary isn’t just about celebrating our past – it’s about driving toward an even more innovative future,” said Stephen Roy. “The same spirit that inspired Jack and Gus Mack to build their first vehicle continues to drive us forward as we pioneer electric and autonomous technologies.”
