Most trucking jobs advertise the same benefits, but they do not pay the same once the week plays out. What matters is how much comes out of your check, how income holds up when miles slow down, and whether time off is paid. Drivers who only compare CPM miss where money is actually gained or lost.

Start With What Hits Your Check Every Week

The quickest way to misread a job is to ignore deductions. Health insurance is usually the biggest one. Weekly premiums, deductibles, and family coverage can erase the advantage of a higher CPM fast. Two jobs can look similar on paper and land very differently once those costs hit, which is why drivers need to know exactly what comes out of each check before comparing anything else.

Check How Pay Holds Up When Miles Drop

A steady week hides problems. The difference shows up when the truck is not moving. Detention, layover, breakdown, and stop pay are what keep income from falling when time is lost. Without them, delays turn directly into smaller checks. Guaranteed or minimum pay adds another layer by keeping earnings from dropping too far when freight slows down.

Separate Home Time from Paid Time Off

Home time and paid time off are not the same. Home time gets a driver off the road, but it does not guarantee income. Paid time off is what keeps money coming in during that break. A job can offer consistent home time and still cost money if PTO is limited or slow to build.

Look at Retirement as Part of Your Pay

Retirement benefits do not show up week to week, but they are still part of total compensation. A company match only matters if it is kept, which makes timing and vesting just as important as the percentage. Leaving too early can erase that value, while staying long enough turns it into income that builds in the background.

Watch Optional Benefits That Add Up

Beyond the main benefits, smaller deductions can stack up quickly. Life insurance, disability coverage, and similar options are often available, but not always covered by the company. What looks minor on its own can reduce take-home pay once multiple options are selected, so drivers need to know what is included and what is deducted.

Pay Attention to Equipment and Support

Some of the biggest differences never show up on a benefits sheet. Equipment quality, maintenance turnaround, and after-hours support all affect downtime. More downtime means less money. Rider and pet policies also shape how livable the job is over time, which matters more than small pay differences once weeks start stacking up.

Use a Simple Comparison Before You Decide

Comparing jobs is less about what is offered and more about how each one handles the same situations. Looking at the full picture makes the difference clear.

Area

What to Look At

Match and vesting

Extra deductions

Optional benefits coming out of your check

Daily work

A job that looks better per mile can still fall behind once two or three of these areas break against it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do all trucking jobs include benefits?
Most company driver jobs do, but smaller carriers vary. Always confirm before accepting a position.

Q: When do benefits start?
Some start after a short waiting period. Others take longer depending on the company.

Q: Are owner operators offered the same benefits?
No. Owner-operators handle their own insurance, retirement, and time off.

Q: Is higher CPM always better?
No. Weekly deductions and unpaid time can cancel out higher mileage pay.

Q: What should drivers check first?
Start with weekly deductions and accessorial pay. Those affect your income the fastest.

Drivers who compare benefits this way see what a job actually pays, not just what it advertises.

For truck drivers, few things are as frustrating as finding safe and legal parking at the end of a long day. This fall, Shell Rotella is tackling that challenge head-on through a partnership with Truck Parking Club, offering drivers free overnight parking when they purchase select oil products.

The Offer at a Glance

From September 1 through October 31, drivers who buy a qualifying Shell Rotella® T6 Full Synthetic or T5 Synthetic Blend oil at participating locations can earn up to $300 in Truck Parking Club Cash. These credits can then be applied toward overnight parking at any Truck Parking Club location across the country.

According to the company, “Truckers get premium engine protection from Shell Rotella and the added peace of mind of secure, convenient overnight parking.”

How Drivers Can Claim Free Parking

Taking advantage of the program is straightforward, and Shell has laid out the steps clearly:

Purchase a qualifying oil change.

Submit your receipt online at rotella.com/nightonus by November 15.

Receive a voucher by email for the Truck Parking Club.

Redeem your credits through the Truck Parking Club app or website by April 30, 2026.

Why It Matters

Truck parking has been one of the industry’s most persistent struggles, with drivers often forced to choose between unsafe parking and costly options that eat into their earnings. By pairing an oil purchase with free parking credits, Shell Rotella is addressing two critical needs at once—engine performance and safe rest stops.

With this partnership, drivers not only extend the life of their equipment but also gain access to more secure and convenient places to rest, making life on the road a little easier.

In a bold move to prioritize its workforce, Averitt has rolled out the largest regional driver pay raise in its 54-year history. The company, which employs over 8,000 team members across its network, confirmed the new compensation updates on Thursday.

For regional drivers holding a hazmat endorsement, pay now jumps to 64 cents per mile—marking a record-setting increase for that division.

“It is important to us to reward our associates with competitive pay, quality benefits, and meaningful opportunities,” said Barry Blakely, Averitt’s president and chief operating officer. “We believe in investing in our people, because they are the foundation of everything we do.”

But the changes don’t stop with regional drivers. The pay boosts extend across various roles within the less-than-truckload (LTL) segment of Averitt’s business. Local pickup and delivery drivers, nighttime shuttle drivers, dockworkers, preventive maintenance technicians, and others in operational roles are all seeing adjustments to their compensation.

This announcement aligns with ongoing trends in the trucking industry. According to the 2025 Operational Costs of Trucking report by the American Transportation Research Institute, driver wages and benefits continue to climb steadily year after year. As of 2025, those combined costs now make up nearly 99.5 cents of every mile driven—an increase of over 55% since 2015.

By responding to industry shifts and reaffirming its commitment to employees, Averitt is positioning itself as a strong contender in both recruiting and retention in today’s highly competitive logistics environment.

Attracting and retaining qualified CDL drivers is a top priority for trucking carriers in 2025. Today’s drivers look beyond paychecks—they want competitive compensation, a balanced lifestyle, supportive work culture, modern equipment, and clear career paths. Carriers that focus on these areas create a strong reputation and build lasting driver loyalty.

Offer Competitive Pay and Solid Benefits

Competitive pay remains a fundamental factor in driver satisfaction. Data from the American Trucking Associations (ATA) shows that carriers offering comprehensive compensation packages — including health insurance, retirement plans, and performance bonuses — experience significantly higher retention rates. For example, carriers that include benefits see up to 25% better driver retention year-over-year.

Prioritize Work-Life Balance with Scheduling Flexibility

Irregular schedules and time away from home are leading causes of driver turnover. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that drivers value predictable routes and options for regional or local driving that allow more home time. Fleets providing these options report up to 30% lower turnover, highlighting the importance of scheduling that respects drivers’ personal lives.

Build a Positive Company Culture

Truck drivers want to feel respected and appreciated. A positive work environment, open communication, and recognition programs have been shown to increase driver loyalty. The National Safety Council found that companies fostering strong workplace culture have 50% better driver retention, proving that respect and support pay dividends

Invest in Modern Trucks and Safety Technology

Drivers prefer carriers who maintain newer equipment equipped with advanced safety features. According to the Technology & Maintenance Council, such investments can reduce accidents by nearly 20%. Comfort and safety in the truck cabin — like ergonomic seats and driver-assist technologies — also contribute to job satisfaction and driver wellbeing.

Maintain Transparent Communication

Clear, honest communication about pay, routes, policies, and expectations builds trust. Studies show that transparency reduces misunderstandings and increases driver commitment. Whether during recruitment or ongoing employment, openness fosters stronger driver-company relationships.

Provide Career Development and Advancement

Opportunities for training, leadership, and professional growth encourage drivers to stay long term. Carriers that support driver development programs often see retention improvements of 20% or more, according to recent industry surveys. Tuition assistance and skills upgrading also attract ambitious drivers.

Streamline Recruitment and Onboarding

A smooth, efficient hiring and onboarding process makes a strong first impression. Using digital recruitment tools to speed applications and maintain fast communication helps carriers fill positions faster and improves early driver satisfaction, setting the stage for long-term success.

The key to standing out to CDL drivers in 2025 lies in focusing on what truly matters to drivers: competitive pay and benefits, work-life balance, positive company culture, modern equipment, transparent communication, career development, and efficient recruitment. Truck Drivers USA (TDUSA), a trusted expert and advocate for drivers nationwide, highlights these priorities as essential for carriers aiming to build loyalty and reduce turnover. By aligning with these proven strategies, trucking carriers can secure a strong, committed driver workforce for the future.

Bipartisan efforts aim to lower costs, attract new drivers, and encourage truck purchases

Efforts to lighten the financial burden of truck drivers and attract new talent to the trucking industry are back on the table with renewed bipartisan legislation.

This week, U.S. Representatives Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.) and Zachary Nunn (R-Iowa) reintroduced the Strengthening Supply Chains through Truck Driver Incentives Act. This initiative proposes refundable tax credits for active drivers and enhanced benefits for newcomers and participants in trucking apprenticeship programs.

Additionally lawmakers led by Representatives Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) and Chris Pappas (D-N.H.) proposed the Modern, Clean, and Safe Trucks Act of 2025. This legislation aims to repeal the 12% federal excise tax (FET) on new truck and trailer purchases, a tax that has been a contentious issue among industry professionals for years.

Both measures have been introduced in previous congressional sessions, but they failed to advance.

A Case for Tax Incentives in Trucking

“Passing this bill is a no-brainer,” said Ryan while announcing the tax incentive legislation. “Better conditions for the workers that drive us forward, more high-paying union jobs, and lower costs for families across the country.”

Ryan emphasized the need to both retain experienced drivers and attract fresh talent to the industry. “We have to be encouraging more people to sign up to drive and stay there, which is why providing incentives like this is so important. Keeping more skilled drivers on the road will also help combat supply chain issues, which jack up prices for American consumers,” he added.

Key Features of the Strengthening Supply Chains through Truck Driver Incentives Act

Refundable Tax Credit for Current Drivers: Up to $7,500 in tax credits for the 2025 and 2026 tax years. Eligible drivers must hold a valid Class A CDL and log at least 1,900 hours of driving within the year.

Enhanced Credit for New and Apprentice Drivers: New truck drivers or those enrolled in registered apprenticeship programs can access up to $10,000 in refundable tax credits.

The legislation also accommodates new drivers who did not operate a truck in the previous year. Such drivers can qualify for the credit after logging at least 1,420 hours behind the wheel in the current year. Those with fewer hours but averaging at least 40 hours per week after starting their driving roles are eligible for a prorated credit.

Tackling the Federal Excise Tax (FET) Burden

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) has thrown its weight behind both bills, highlighting the financial strain imposed by the FET. Originally introduced in 1917 to fund World War I, this tax has grown to become the highest-percentage federal excise tax on any U.S. good, costing the trucking industry a staggering $6 billion annually.

“In many cases, this exorbitant additional expense simply puts new trucks out of reach, and small businesses with less access to capital are disproportionately harmed,” ATA stated in a press release.

The association also pointed out broader implications of keeping the FET in place, including stifled demand for new trucks and reduced manufacturing jobs. Furthermore, it delays the adoption of newer, safer, and more environmentally friendly vehicles.

Deciding between a local trucking job and an over-the-road (OTR) position is one of the most important choices a truck driver can make. Both career paths offer distinct advantages and challenges that can significantly influence your lifestyle, earnings, and job satisfaction. By understanding the differences, you can choose the route that aligns with your priorities and goals.

Below, we’ll explore the key factors that differentiate local and OTR trucking careers, helping you evaluate which option best suits your preferences.

Time at Home

Local Trucking

Local trucking is an excellent option for drivers who value staying close to family or managing personal commitments. Local truckers usually operate on regional routes, which allows them to return home every evening or at least a few times a week. Whether it’s attending a family dinner or managing household responsibilities, local trucking tends to provide a more stable work-life balance.

OTR Trucking

OTR drivers often spend weeks on the road, taking long-haul routes across state lines or even coast-to-coast. While this lifestyle appeals to those who enjoy traveling and experiencing new places, it can be a tough adjustment for drivers who prioritize family time or a consistent schedule.

Work Schedule and Control

Local Trucking

Local drivers typically work set shifts, providing a predictable daily routine. Many local routes follow regular business hours, with weekends or holidays off, offering more opportunities for personal time.

OTR Trucking

Flexibility is both a perk and a challenge of OTR trucking. Drivers often have irregular schedules, including night shifts, weekends, and holiday work. While some drivers appreciate the flexibility to plan their own trip pacing, the lack of a fixed routine may be a downside for those seeking more structure.

Pay and Benefits

Local Trucking

Local truck drivers earn competitive wages, often through hourly pay or daily rates. However, their overall earnings might not reach the same level as OTR drivers due to the shorter routes and fewer hours. Local jobs frequently include robust benefits packages, such as healthcare, retirement plans, and paid time off, especially with smaller, family-owned businesses.

OTR Trucking

OTR drivers generally earn more due to the extended hours, longer distances, and time spent away from home. Many companies offer additional income opportunities, such as bonuses for mileage, safety performance, or long-haul deliveries. While the pay may look appealing, depending on the employer, OTR roles may come with less comprehensive benefits than local trucking jobs.

Job Stability and Career Progression

Local Trucking

Local roles usually provide steadier schedules and reliable routes. This stability often leads to longer-term job security, and many local companies also offer career growth opportunities, including promotions or specialized training programs. The increasing need for regional deliveries ensures continued demand for local truck drivers.

OTR Trucking

OTR positions often offer greater variety, allowing drivers to explore cross-country routes and transport diverse types of freight. However, job stability can sometimes be affected by market conditions, such as fuel prices and seasonal shipping demands. Drivers working for large national carriers may benefit from more growth opportunities than those employed by smaller firms.

Physical and Mental Demands

Local Trucking

Taking shorter trips and operating within limited areas means local trucking tends to be less physically and mentally taxing. Drivers enjoy shorter hours behind the wheel, which reduces fatigue and health risks associated with prolonged sitting. Additionally, local trucking often involves less isolation, with drivers returning home daily to their support networks.

OTR Trucking

The demands of OTR trucking are typically higher, as drivers spend extended periods on the road. Long hours, insufficient physical activity, and the isolation of driving alone can pose challenges to physical and mental health. However, proactive habits like regular exercise and staying connected with friends and family can help mitigate these challenges.

Lifestyle Differences

Local Trucking

Local trucking is an obvious choice for individuals who prioritize work-life balance. Consistent home time allows local drivers to maintain personal relationships, enjoy hobbies, and participate in daily family activities. This flexibility creates a more stable lifestyle for those with significant personal obligations.

OTR Trucking

For adventurous spirits who enjoy exploring new places, OTR trucking offers a unique lifestyle filled with cross-country travels. However, time away from home can strain relationships and make it difficult to meet family commitments. Adjusting to life on the road requires high independence and the ability to adapt to changing environments.

Choosing the Right Fit

Ultimately, the decision between local and OTR trucking comes down to what you value most in your career.

If you prioritize being home regularly, having a predictable work schedule, and enjoying a steady lifestyle, local trucking is likely the better fit.

OTR trucking offers exciting opportunities for those seeking higher pay, the thrill of hitting the open road, and the freedom to travel.

Both options come with rewards and challenges, so evaluating your personal needs and long-term career goals is key. With the growing demand for skilled drivers in both sectors, there’s never been a better time to choose the role that aligns with your unique priorities.

The trucking industry is witnessing a significant transformation with the recent extension of U.S. Highway 67 into the Interstate 57 network. Covering over 100 miles, this newly designated section links North Little Rock to Walnut Ridge in Arkansas, marking a crucial step in the expansion of I-57. This development promises to bring substantial advantages for truckers navigating through this area.

This highway enhancement is a long-anticipated stride toward establishing a direct interstate route from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Chicago, Illinois. With the complete extension of I-57, truck drivers can expect more streamlined journeys, reducing both travel time and the distance covered when transporting goods between these key urban centers.

Designating this 100-mile corridor as part of I-57 is a noteworthy advancement. It not only bolsters Arkansas’ transportation network but also provides truckers with more dependable routes, particularly between the bustling hubs of Little Rock and Chicago. The I-57 extension aims to circumvent congested areas in major cities such as St. Louis, Missouri, and Springfield, Illinois, thereby improving the efficiency of daily interstate travel for truckers.

Progress on the I-57 extension continues, with construction advancing on the 130-mile segment linking Walnut Ridge to Sikeston, Missouri. Upon completion, I-57 will stretch over 640 miles, offering a more direct and efficient path for freight movement. This extension is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly on Interstate 40 between West Memphis and Little Rock, as well as Interstate 55 between West Memphis and Sikeston, Missouri. These upgrades are set to enhance truckers’ experiences by minimizing time lost to traffic snarls, boosting safety, and optimizing travel routes.

The addition to a bypass around Corning, Arkansas, is another enhancement that will connect the highway to Missouri, closing the gap between Walnut Ridge and the Missouri state line. Once Missouri finalizes its portion of I-57, the entire project is expected to be completed within five to eight years, delivering a fully integrated and efficient interstate corridor for truckers.

The I-57 expansion offers numerous benefits for truck drivers, including faster, more reliable routes and smoother connections between key cities, ultimately enhancing productivity and road safety. For those involved in regional freight transport, the future outlook for I-57 is optimistic.

With the complete I-57 extension, truckers can anticipate an improved travel experience, characterized by enhanced traffic flow, reduced travel durations, and minimized obstacles. As construction progresses and the project nears completion, it is poised to have a lasting positive impact on the trucking industry’s day-to-day operations.
