Summer on the road brings a different set of challenges. A hot cab after a long day, crowded showers, limited healthy food, and a parking lot that seems to hold the day’s heat long after the sun goes down can make even a routine stop feel exhausting. So we asked the Truck Drivers USA community a simple question:

If you could invent one new truck stop amenity for summer, what would it be?

The responses covered everything from practical improvements to creative ideas, but several themes appeared again and again.

Drivers Want More Ways to Cool Off

The most common request was surprisingly simple. Drivers want a place to cool down. Several community members suggested adding swimming pools or water features to truck stops.

Skip Sims, Donna Hall, Vernita Stokes, Narine Ayvazyan, Michael Bryant, Brian Dee Driver, and Keith Conley Sr. all mentioned swimming pools as their top choice. Becky Montgomery imagined taking it a step further with a swimming pool featuring a lazy float-up bar, while Lloyd Heaver Jr. suggested a lazy river for drivers looking to relax after a long day.

Others focused on smaller ideas that could make a big difference during extreme heat. Jeremy Johnson suggested a splash pad, Shaun Hannie and Omar C. Perez recommended private outdoor showers, Richard Dillman and George Dutra called for covered parking to help keep trucks cooler, and Travis Honeycutt thought misters at the fuel pumps would make fueling more comfortable during the summer.

Better Food Was High on the Wish List

Food was another topic that came up repeatedly. Many drivers said they would trade another fast food option for a real restaurant serving freshly prepared meals.

Sandy Atkins described a menu filled with roast beef, homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes, vegetables, fresh desserts, iced tea, and fresh coffee. Rhonda Crawford simply asked for “granny’s home-cooked meal on demand.”

Brandon Lepisto wanted a 24-hour old-school full-service restaurant, while Bill Wittich, Lynden Mathias, and Leonard Downes III all called for a true sit-down restaurant. Peter Dunham and Cindy Beeman echoed that idea by asking for real home-cooked food instead of another fast food counter.

Several drivers also liked the idea of easier access to meals. Mushtaq Bacha suggested drive-through restaurants designed for semis, Renee Murchison Roberts recommended drive-through barbecue pickup, and Cody Huddleston envisioned a delivery service that would bring affordable, healthier meals directly to parked trucks.

Health and Wellness Continue to Matter

Many responses reflected a growing interest in staying healthy while living on the road.

Greg Diamond thought a small gym would fit today’s trucking lifestyle, while Tony Noone, Michael Benson, Zane Mowrey, Doug Arthur, Alec McGhee, and Elizabeth Hoyt all wanted fitness centers at truck stops.

Jeffery Lee Buford suggested dedicated wellness centers, and Grant Viola expanded on that idea with a health center that includes a gym, pool, doctors, and a pharmacy.

Recovery was another popular theme. William Lakewood suggested a massage center for sore backs, while Evangeline Clay and Maggie Sisi Espinal both mentioned massage therapy as a welcome addition.

Everyday Conveniences Can Make a Big Difference

Not every suggestion involved major construction.

Melissa Owens wished every fuel island had working hoses, soap dispensers, and paper towels so drivers could wash up before pulling forward. Jim Wilson called for dependable Wi-Fi throughout truck parking areas, while Deborah Davis suggested golf cart transportation between the parking lot and the store.

Several drivers focused on making truck stops more practical. Chad E. Collins and McNease Robert both recommended dedicated 30-minute parking areas, Sam Hook Jr. suggested separate parking for refrigerated trailers, and Gregory Maly proposed combining a truck stop with a full grocery store.

Drivers also wanted cleaner facilities. Brenda Wallace suggested a rinse-off station with free water, Jedidiah Vette recommended foot wash stations, and Charlotte Adams thought complimentary shower shoes would be a nice touch.

A Place to Relax Matters Too

After hours behind the wheel, many drivers simply want somewhere comfortable to unwind.

Suzi Taylor Kinsey suggested bunk rooms where drivers could spend time outside the truck. Leo Gorman envisioned shaded seating areas with fans, while Barb Little imagined barbecue areas with picnic tables where drivers and their families could relax together during home time on the road.

Truck drivers traveling with pets also had ideas. Trucker Puck wanted a large dog park, and Hannah Shea described a shaded dog park with water stations, benches, waste bags, and play equipment designed specifically for drivers traveling with their dogs.

One Idea Stood Above the Rest

Although the responses covered a wide range of ideas, one request appeared over and over.

Drivers repeatedly called for **free showers**, regardless of whether they purchased fuel.

Lorita Adkins wanted twice as many showers with no usage fee. Colt Cheatham called hygiene “a basic human right,” while Pat Summey Gordon, Teresa Simonson, Russell Fiedler, and Jason Eugene Badman all suggested making showers more accessible through free access or affordable subscription options.

Comfort, cleanliness, and convenience may not sound revolutionary, but judging by the community’s responses, those are the improvements drivers would appreciate most.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the most common truck stop suggestion?

Swimming pools, fitness centers, free showers, and better restaurant options appeared more often than any other ideas shared by the community.

Were most responses focused on entertainment?

No. While a few drivers suggested fun additions, most responses centered on practical improvements that would make life on the road more comfortable, especially during the summer.

Did drivers mention healthier food options?

Yes. Many respondents asked for home-cooked meals, fresh ingredients, grocery stores, or healthier alternatives to traditional fast food.

What does this say about today’s drivers?

The responses suggest many drivers value amenities that improve comfort, hygiene, wellness, and overall quality of life just as much as conveniences related to fueling or parking.

The truck stops drivers rely on most in America are Iowa 80 Truckstop, TA TravelCenters of America, Pilot Flying J, Little America Travel Center, and select Buc-ee’s locations because they provide the highest parking capacity, consistent layouts, and dependable services across major freight routes.

Moderate to high

Limited

These locations stand out based on four consistent factors: parking availability, facility condition, service access, and reliability across routes.

What makes a truck stop one driver relies on?

Drivers rely on truck stops that consistently provide parking, clean facilities, and fast access without delays. Parking availability in the evening matters most because it directly affects hours of service and trip planning.

Once parking is covered, the focus shifts to how efficiently a stop supports the rest of the trip. Clean facilities improve rest on multi-day runs, while fast-moving fuel lanes reduce downtime. Access to maintenance or tire service becomes critical when issues come up on the road.

Consistency across locations is what allows drivers to plan stops without second-guessing the outcome.

Which truck stops do drivers rely on most?

Those expectations show up clearly in the stops drivers return to most often.

Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott, Iowa, is widely recognized as the largest truck stop in the United States and is used as a destination stop because it can handle high volume without sacrificing access to services.

TA TravelCenters of America operates a nationwide network built for truck traffic. Drivers use these locations because they know what to expect in terms of parking, fuel access, and maintenance support along major routes.

Pilot Flying J fills a different role by offering the widest coverage across U.S. highways. It is often the default option when drivers need to stop without leaving their route.

Little America Travel Center along I-80 in Wyoming is used for a different reason. Its high parking capacity and lower congestion make it a reliable overnight option when larger chain locations are full.

Buc-ee’s locations that accommodate trucks are used more selectively. Where access is available, they stand out for facility condition rather than network coverage.

How do these truck stops compare when planning a stop?

When planning, the difference between these stops comes down to how they are used during a run.

Iowa 80 works best as a full-service stop where multiple needs can be handled at once. TA TravelCenters of America supports long-haul planning by offering consistent services across routes. Pilot Flying J is most useful when staying on route is the priority, and time off the highway needs to be minimal.

Little America becomes the better option when parking availability matters more than services. Buc-ee’s fits in when available, but it is not something drivers can rely on consistently across routes.

The choice is less about which stop is “better” and more about which one fits the situation at that point in the trip.

How do chain truck stops compare to independent locations?

That same decision shows up when comparing chain and independent truck stops.

Chains provide predictable layouts, fuel access, and services, which make planning easier. Independent stops vary more, but they often provide easier parking, especially later in the day when chain locations are full.

Drivers who manage time well typically use chains for structure and independent stops for flexibility.

What should drivers prioritize when choosing a truck stop?

At that point, the focus shifts to what actually matters in the moment.

Parking availability during peak hours

Clean and usable facilities

Fuel lanes that move efficiently

Space for safe entry and exit

Access to service when needed

These factors determine whether a stop supports the trip or creates delays.

Are the best truck stops the same on every route?

Not every route gives drivers the same options.

High-traffic corridors rely heavily on chain locations, which tend to fill earlier in the day. Lower-density routes often provide more flexibility, with independent or regional stops offering better parking availability.

Understanding how those patterns change by route helps drivers make better decisions before they reach the point of needing a stop.

How can drivers consistently find reliable truck stops?

That is where planning and experience come together.

Drivers who consistently find reliable stops check parking conditions before arrival and adjust based on time of day. Real-time tools help, but repeated routes make the biggest difference over time.

Knowing which stops consistently have space and which ones fill early removes guesswork and keeps trips on schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the largest truck stop in America?
Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott, Iowa, is widely recognized as the largest truck stop in the United States.

Q: Are chain truck stops better than independent ones?
Chain stops provide consistency, while independent stops often provide more available parking.

Q: What time do truck stops usually fill up?
Most truck stops begin filling in the late afternoon and early evening along major freight routes.

Q: Do all truck stops offer showers?
No, but most major truck stop chains provide shower facilities.

Q: How can drivers find parking availability?
Drivers use route planning tools and apps that show real-time parking availability and driver feedback.

Truck stops drivers rely on most are the ones that consistently provide parking, predictable access, and the ability to stay on schedule without delays.

Pilot has released a redesigned version of its mobile app, stating that the update is intended to make everyday stops easier and faster for drivers while consolidating the company’s digital tools under one consistent experience.

According to Pilot, the refreshed app is part of a broader effort to align how drivers interact with the brand across fuel locations, in-store services, and online platforms. The update follows recent changes to Pilot’s website and mobile ordering tools, all aimed at reducing friction for drivers planning their stops.

“Every journey is better with a wingman, and the Pilot app is built to be that trusted companion,” says Kari Irons, vice president of marketing and brand at Pilot. “Together with mobile ordering and our redesigned website, we’re connecting the dots across the entire digital experience so drivers can plan, save time, and enjoy more rewarding stops with Pilot.”

What Drivers Will Notice in the Updated App

The pilot says the new version of the app has been redesigned with a clearer layout and fewer steps, allowing drivers to find what they need more quickly while on the road. The company describes the interface as simpler and more personalized, with performance improvements meant to reduce load times and delays.

Features highlighted by Pilot include:

A cleaner and more intuitive layout

Personalization based on travel needs

Faster access to rewards, offers, and app features

Improved reliability and security

The company says these changes are intended to make the app easier to navigate during busy travel days and reduce the time drivers spend managing stops.

One Profile for Professional and Personal Travel

One of the more practical changes for drivers is the addition of flexible driver profiles. With the updated app, users can now switch between a professional driver profile and an auto driver profile without needing multiple accounts.

Pilot says this allows drivers to access amenities, offers, and rewards whether they are working or traveling off duty, all from a single login. The goal, according to the company, is to reduce account management headaches and keep everything in one place.

Website Updates, Support the App Changes

Alongside the app update, Pilot also recently introduced a redesigned website at PilotCompany.com. The site features a refreshed layout and simplified navigation designed to help users plan fuel stops, check location amenities, and reserve showers and parking.

Pilot positions the app and website updates as connected tools rather than standalone improvements, with both designed to support trip planning before arrival and smoother experiences once drivers reach a location.

A Continued Push Toward Digital Convenience

For drivers and fleet stakeholders, Pilot’s app update reflects a broader trend across the travel center industry toward faster digital tools that support trip planning, reduce time spent waiting, and make stops more predictable.

While the company frames the redesign as part of brand consistency, the practical takeaway for drivers is a more streamlined app experience built around everyday needs on the road, from planning to managing rewards and services in fewer steps.

Every truck driver knows the feeling of pulling off the interstate after a long stretch and spotting a place that feels familiar before you even park. For many drivers running on 80 through the Midwest, that place is Iowa 80 in Walcott. Known as the world’s largest truck stop, it has been part of life on the road for generations, and it continues to evolve as trucking itself faces new pressures.

What started as a small roadside stop in 1964 has grown into a massive operation that serves millions of visitors each year. Today, Iowa 80 spans more than 220 acres, offers roughly 900 truck parking spaces, and produces about 350,000 meals annually. For drivers, it is more than a fuel stop. It is a place to rest, eat, reset, and handle the practical needs that come with life on the road.

From a simple stop to a trucking landmark

Iowa 80 began when Bill Moon, then a regional manager for Standard Oil, saw potential along the newly built Interstate 80. The original facility was modest, with a small store, a single lube bay, and a basic restaurant. Over time, as traffic increased and trucking expanded, the stop grew alongside it.

By the 1980s, the operation had expanded significantly. In 1984, Moon bought out the corporation, and after he died in 1992, the location became a TravelCenters of America franchise while remaining family-owned. Today, it operates under the Iowa 80 Group, which also runs other truck stop locations in different states.

That long history matters to drivers because it reflects something rare in today’s market. Iowa 80 has adapted without losing its identity as a driver-focused stop.

Feeding drivers at a massive scale

One of the clearest signs of Iowa 80’s scale is its food operation. Producing roughly 350,000 meals a year requires round-the-clock coordination, steady staffing, and constant supply deliveries. The Iowa 80 Kitchen serves classic comfort food that appeals to drivers who want a hot, filling meal without guesswork.

The kitchen runs nonstop, adjusting to traffic surges caused by weather delays, holidays, or construction slowdowns. When drivers get stuck waiting out snow or road closures, the restaurant becomes a central part of keeping people fed and moving when conditions improve.

For many drivers, having a reliable place to eat is not a luxury. It is part of managing hours, rest, and health on the road.

More than fuel and food

Iowa 80 has built its reputation by offering far more than the basics. Drivers can access showers, laundry, repair services, and fuel at all hours. The site also includes a trucking museum filled with vintage equipment and memorabilia that reflects the history of the profession.

Wellness services like chiropractic care and dental offices are available on site, addressing needs that are hard to schedule during normal business hours when you are running freight. There is also a movie theater, gift shops, and even pet-friendly areas for drivers traveling with animals.

The trucking museum is set for a major expansion in 2026, adding about 25,000 square feet to showcase more of the Moon family’s collection and trucking history. For drivers, it is a reminder that the industry has deep roots, even as technology and regulations change.

Operating through industry challenges

Family-owned truck stops across the country have been under pressure for years. Rising fuel costs, labor shortages, and competition from large corporate chains have forced many independents to close or sell. Iowa 80 has managed to hold its ground by diversifying services and continually reinvesting in the property.

Infrastructure challenges also play a role. Temporary closures or construction on Interstate 80 can affect traffic flow and daily operations. When ramps close or traffic slows, stops like Iowa 80 have to adjust staffing and inventory quickly to meet demand without waste.

Despite those challenges, Iowa 80 continues to serve as a key node in the national freight network. Millions of gallons of fuel move through the site each year, and countless drivers rely on it as a consistent stop in an unpredictable job.

Why Iowa 80 still matters to truck drivers

For drivers, Iowa 80 represents stability in an industry that often feels anything but stable. It is a place where you know what to expect. There is parking, there is food, there are services, and there is space to take a breath before getting back on the road.

As trucking faces changes tied to technology, fuel alternatives, and shifting freight patterns, places like Iowa 80 show how tradition and adaptation can coexist. It has grown from a small roadside stop into a complex operation without losing sight of who it serves.

In a job defined by miles and deadlines, Iowa 80 remains a reminder that some parts of the road are still built with drivers in mind.

RaceTrac has reached a major milestone in its efforts to better serve professional drivers with the opening of its 100th high-flow diesel location in Grapevine, Texas. The site, located at 3955 Grapevine Mills Parkway, first opened in 2019 and recently completed upgrades to add a rear canopy offering both high-flow diesel and diesel exhaust fluid directly at the pump.

The company began building out its diesel network in 2018, and the latest expansion reflects its ongoing commitment to support professional drivers and fleets with reliable fueling options. Today, both RaceTrac and RaceWay stores feature high-flow diesel canopies designed with truck drivers in mind.

While RaceTrac is best known for its convenience stores, the company also operates its own fleet. That firsthand experience, according to RaceTrac, helps shape the way it approaches fuel, amenities, and services tailored specifically for trucking operations.

“Operating our own fleet gives us firsthand knowledge of what it takes to keep trucks on the road and profitable for their operators,” said Mark Reese, vice president of operations, facility management, data analytics, loss prevention, and store support for RaceTrac. “We’re proud to serve one of our nation’s most crucial professions by offering convenient locations, competitive fuel pricing, and services tailored to the specific requirements of the trucking industry.”

Beyond fueling, RaceTrac has been investing in technology that makes the process even easier. Recent partnerships with ONRAMP and Relay will expand mobile payment solutions across its network, streamlining transactions at both travel centers and high-flow diesel stores.

September will also mark the launch of RaceTrac’s Truck Driver Appreciation Month, a campaign celebrating the work of professional drivers during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. Promotions will include:

One free pizza slice each week

One free fountain drink each week

Double loyalty points on every fuel purchase throughout the month

In addition to fuel options like high-flow diesel with DEF at the pump, RaceTrac locations provide amenities that matter most to drivers — from truck parking to freshly made food and drinks that keep long days on the road running smoothly.

Truck stops are more than just refueling points; they’re strategic opportunities to boost your haul efficiency, manage your time, and improve your comfort on the road. Seasoned drivers know that maximizing these stops can make a big difference in stress levels and bottom-line profits. Here are 10 surprising hacks that deliver practical, real-world value at truck stops.

1. Use Real-Time Parking Data and Timing with Trucker Path

Parking is often the bottleneck that slows you down. Many professional drivers use Trucker Path, a leading app that provides real-time parking availability and traffic updates at truck stops nationwide. Timing your arrival during low-traffic windows, often an hour before or after peak times, increases your chances of grabbing a spot close to amenities like showers or fuel islands, saving walking time and hassle.

2. Pre-Plan Amenities with Truck-Specific Navigation Apps

General GPS apps don’t account for truck-specific needs. Leverage trucker-focused navigation tools such as CoPilot GPS or Sygic Truck GPS Navigation, which provide detailed layouts of stops including shower availability, laundromats, Wi-Fi zones, and safe parking areas. Using these apps upfront prevents wasted time circling or settling for subpar stops.

3. Parking Strategy: Balance Protection and Quick Departure

Don’t just park anywhere. Choose spots away from busy entrance lanes to avoid door dings and accidents, but near lot exits when possible to reduce exit delays during busy mornings. Some drivers even scout for hidden spots shielded from wind and noise, improving rest quality.

4. Stagger Laundry and Shower Usage to Maximize Efficiency

If your stop has both facilities, start laundry first and then book your shower time strategically. By showering while your clothes wash, you cut downtime in half, letting you relax or catch a meal instead of waiting idly.

5. Time Fuel Stops with Pricing and Promotions Using Fuelbook

Fuel costs eat into every haul. Apps like Fuelbook help you monitor fuel prices at different truck stops in your route area in real time. Combine this with fuel card programs like Comdata or WEX to take advantage of discounts and rebates. Scheduling fuel stops at the right times and locations can yield substantial savings.

6. Conduct Security Checks Using Both Tech and Routine Walkarounds

Besides physical inspections of your rig before leaving, familiarize yourself with security camera placements at stops and choose parking spots in well-monitored areas. Consider simple cab alarms or motion sensors, such as Kodiak Security systems, to alert you of tampering. Safety begins at the truck stop and lasts on the road.

7. Exploit Quiet Hours for Better Amenities Access

Many truck stops have predictable quiet periods—often late night or early morning—when showers, restaurants, and lounges are less crowded. Planning your stops during these times means quicker service, cleaner facilities, and reduced noise levels, contributing to better rest and faster breaks.

8. Carry Compact, Multi-Functional Gear That Saves Space and Time

Instead of bulky gear, opt for compact multi-use products like quick-dry towels, portable water filters (such as LifeStraw Personal Water Filter), and all-in-one hygiene kits. These streamline rest stops and keep your cab uncluttered without sacrificing comfort.

9. Build Rapport with Truck Stop Staff for Exclusive Perks

Regular interaction with the fuel desk and service staff can unlock insider tips like upcoming promotions, less busy parking zones, or nearby off-site amenities. Good relationships occasionally lead to faster check-ins or access to offers not publicized online.

10. Pre-Pack Ready-to-Eat, High-Energy Meals to Minimize Stop Duration

Truck stop dining can eat valuable time and increase expenses. Preparing nutritious meals and snacks that require no refrigeration or prep lets you eat quickly during breaks or on the move, cutting down stop duration and keeping energy levels steady.

Truck stops are vital rest and refuel points, but drivers who master these advanced strategies can turn routine breaks into powerful productivity boosters. By combining smart use of technology, efficient time management, enhanced security awareness, and better personal prep, you’ll save time, lower expenses, and increase comfort on every haul. Apply these hacks at your next stop and see how small adjustments can lead to smoother trips and stronger earnings.

Truck drivers know the road better than anyone else, and finding the perfect truck stop can make or break a day—or even a week. When we asked our community of drivers to share their favorite truck stops, the responses ranged from iconic destinations to hidden gems. Here are some top picks from real drivers who live life on the road.

Iowa 80: The World’s Largest Truck Stop

Kyle Yadon praised Iowa 80 for its incredible truck wash and vast store. “But my actual favorite,” he added, “is a little hole-in-the-wall place with plenty of parking, but I won’t say where so it stays that way.” Patricia DePover and Rafael Pardo also gave shoutouts to Iowa 80, with Rafael noting its impressive 900+ parking spots and extensive shopping options.

Scenic and Functional Stops

Rachel E. Jackson mentioned several favorites, including the 7 Feathers Truck Stop in Canyonville, OR, which she loved for its parking and scenery. She also reminisced about the now-defunct Boomtown truck stop. Chris Burke highlighted a stop in Big Cabin, OK, with its massive dirt lot and old-school diner vibes. He also recommended Smiley’s Travel Shop in Virginia, located along I-81.

Classic Favorites That Have Changed

Bill Holloway’s favorite was the Triple T Truck Stop in Tucson, AZ, though he noted it had undergone significant changes over the years. Similarly, Edward Joseph misses the Whites Travel Center in Raphine, VA, now known as Petro.

Modern Amenities and Comforts

Angie Ables recommends the Sapp Bros in Commerce City, CO, particularly for its luxurious Shower #1, complete with a dual shower and a large tub. Dennis Spisak favored Truck World in Hubbard, OH, right off I-80. And Kevin Stewart loves Bill’s Truck Stop in Lexington, NC, a place he’s visited since childhood.

Unique and Memorable Stops

Lyle W. Brunson shared his enthusiasm for Jubitz near Portland, OR, a truck stop that boasts two restaurants, a bar, a movie theater, a dentist, a chrome shop, and much more. Heather Bennett gave a special nod to Stripes for their fresh tortillas and salsa bar, while Benjamin Rickel appreciates any stop with open parking and Pilot for its coffee.

Sentimental Favorites
