In a heartwarming display of kindness and courage, truck driver Joshua Day from Potsdam, OH, has been recognized as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). Day, who works for ABF Freight in Fort Smith, Arkansas, went above and beyond to assist a fellow motorist whose pickup truck and camper had flipped.
The incident took place on June 13, 2023, around 12:20 p.m. as Day was driving on Interstate 75 in London, KY. While Day was cruising in the right lane, a pickup truck towing a camper trailer was traveling in the left traffic lane. Unfortunately, the driver lost control of his vehicle, careened across two lanes, and ultimately flipped the truck and camper a staggering four times.
“He lost control of his truck and his camper and turned his truck and camper over in front of the semi that I was driving,” said Day. “I did everything I could do to avoid hitting him—thank God I didn’t hit him.”
Undeterred by the chaos, Day immediately sprang into action. Day quickly and safely pulled over, called 911, and helped the confused and dazed driver out of the crashed vehicle. With propane tanks leaking, Day’s priority was to get the injured driver to safety. The London Police Department promptly arrived and cleanup crews efficiently handled the leaking propane.
“The severity of the accident is what made me stop,” said Day, who has been driving a truck for 13 years. “That’s what we’re supposed to do as humans, right?”
