Michael Callahan earned the title of Highway Angel from the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). The recognition comes as a result of Callahan’s heroic act of rescuing a couple who had crashed their vehicle into a deep ravine next to the truck stop where he was parked.
In the early hours of April 19, 2023, at a Pilot truck stop in Bowman, SC, Callahan sprang into action when he heard a loud crash. His quick thinking and brave actions made all the difference to this stranded couple, proving that there are still real-life heroes on our highways.
“I stopped what I was doing; I knew something bad had happened,” he said. “A small car with two passengers in it had gone off the road and over a 25-foot bank, landing in a ditch between the highway and the truck stop.”
He immediately sprang into action, rushing to the passengers’ aid and quickly dialing 911. Both the young man and woman seemed unharmed, despite their severely damaged vehicle, a small relief amidst the chaos.
Offering comfort and warmth, he handed the woman a blanket and stayed by their side until the emergency responders arrived. He admits he found it odd that he was the sole individual who stepped up to assist the victims of the crash.
“It was a truck stop full of trucks, and it surprised me that nobody else heard it or saw it — I was the only one there,” Callahan said. “It was the right thing to do; I would hope if my kids ran off the road, somebody would stop to help.”
