Travis Braun is quite the Highway Angel. The Truckload Carriers Association recently bestowed this recognition upon him for his heroic deed of stopping to help an elderly man who had crashed into a concrete median in the middle of a lonely night. Braun’s employer, ABF Freight out of Fort Smith, Arkansas, is proud that one of their drivers has been honored with such distinction.
Braun was traveling down I-44 near Vinita, Oklahoma, on March 8 when he witnessed a truck pulling a trailer in front of him pull off to the side of the road and seemingly attempt a U-turn. The vehicle ended up driving straight into a concrete median barrier.
“It blocked the entire interstate,” Braun said.
When Braun witnessed a vehicle crash, he immediately stopped to help. Upon arriving at the scene, it was clear that the driver – an elderly man in his 70s – had been shaken up and confused by what happened. Braun called 911 while remaining on site until first responders arrived. Upon their arrival, first responders wanted the driver to move his crashed vehicle; however, the man was so confused, he couldn’t comprehend the instructions.
Upon being granted permission from police officers present on the scene, Braun moved the vehicle, safely parking it across the road to avoid further accidents.
“I just felt like it was the right thing to do,” he said.
