Before hitting the road, truck drivers must meet federal and state requirements, including passing a mandatory DOT physical exam. This exam ensures that drivers are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate commercial vehicles. Curious about what the exam entails? Read on to find out.

Do I Need a DOT Physical?

You must pass a DOT physical if you:

  • Drive interstate with a vehicle weighing 10,001 lbs. or more
  • Operate a vehicle designed to carry over 15 passengers
  • Transport hazardous materials
  • Are a paid driver of a vehicle carrying over eight people

How Often Do I Need a DOT Physical?

After obtaining your CDL, you’ll need to take the DOT physical every two years. However, if you have a health condition that requires monitoring, you may need to take it more frequently. Once you pass, you’ll receive a certificate that you’ll need to submit to your employer.

What to Expect During the DOT Physical

During the exam, a certified medical examiner will assess your current health and medical history. Here are the key health requirements:

  • Vision: Must have 20/40 acuity in each eye and 70″ peripheral vision
  • Hearing: Must be able to perceive a forced whisper at five feet without a hearing aid
  • Blood Pressure: Your blood pressure and pulse will be checked. Depending on your readings, you may receive a certificate for two years, one year, or a temporary certificate for three months. If your blood pressure is 180/110, however, you’ll be disqualified.
  • Urinalysis: Screening for underlying health issues
  • Physical Examination: Comprehensive assessment of general health including general appearance, lung and chest function, extremities, spine, genitourinary system, vascular health, abdomen and viscera, mouth and throat, eyes, ears, and heart.

Where Can I Get a DOT Physical?

Find a certified medical examiner near you through the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. You can also inquire with your primary care doctor if they are qualified.
