As autumn rolls in, it’s time for owner-operators to start organizing their paperwork and permits.
During a recent episode of Land Line Now, Brittany Murphy and Caleb Sears from our Permits and Licensing Department discussed some permits that are up for renewal.
Here are a few highlights from the episode.
Unified Carrier Registration
If you’re a motor carrier with an active U.S. DOT number marked interstate, you need to pay the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) fee. This annual permit is required regardless of whether you use your DOT number or not.
It’s not just participating states enforcing UCR requirements – it’s the law for all states, regardless of funding. The only non-participating states are Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C.
From October 1 to December 31, file and pay your UCR fee. It’s quick and easy for registered drivers. Just visit the UCR website, enter your DOT number, verify your info, and pay.
Fees are based on tiers and the size of your fleet. Most OOIDA members fall into the first two tiers, with fees starting at $41 for carriers with two or fewer trucks.
International Fuel Tax Agreement
Stay on top of your IFTA permit renewal by understanding your state’s guidelines for when and how to renew.
Different states have different processes, with some offering auto-renewals and others requiring extra effort. Be sure to watch out for reminders from your state about the renewal period.
In the majority of states, the IFTA renewal period starts on October 1st. Carriers must display the decal for the next year by December 31st.
Weight/distance permits
If you operate in Connecticut, Kentucky, New Mexico, New York, or Oregon, you need to pay fees based on the miles you drive in those states. In addition, you’ll need to register annually for a weight/distance permit.
This year, the only state that requires renewal is New Mexico. Don’t worry, the process is simple for carriers already registered with the state. You just need to verify your information from the previous year.
The renewal period opens on Oct. 1 and must be completed by Dec. 31.
