Looking Back at First Black Woman to drive for Walmart

What a proud accomplishment for Ivery Stokes. She became the first female truck driver for Wal-Mart. Alongside her husband, her journey began when he said, “Come on, get up, I’m going to get up and put you in the seat.” She then enrolled in trucking school and then began her career working in Cullman, Alabama and later LaGrange, Georgia.

Mrs. Stokes had the honor of going to the White House and receiving the Ron Brown Award and making the cover of Walmart World twice. Stokes now works in transportation for Amazon.  Ivery Stokes is a living legend, according to her new employer Amazon.

Mrs. Stokes declared, “Once you have truck driving in your blood, it’s there and that’s what I am – a people’s person. I love being out there and I love meeting people. I don’t meet strangers, I just love being out.”
