<p>From the 1960s into the early 1980s, they hauled freight across the Interstate Highway System, lined truck stop parking lots, and filled dealership inventories. Nearly every major truck manufacturer built cabover models because they solved one of the industry&#8217;s biggest challenges at the time: fitting as much trailer as possible within legal length limits.</p>
<p>Today, conventional tractors dominate North American highways. Cabovers never disappeared completely, but they became a much less common sight. The shift happened gradually as regulations changed, truck designs improved, and fleets began placing greater value on driver comfort and operating efficiency.</p>
<h1>When Shorter Trucks Meant Longer Trailers</h1>
<p>For years, federal and state regulations limited the overall length of a tractor-trailer combination. Every foot occupied by the tractor was one less foot available for the trailer.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="https://www.volvotrucks.us/">Volvo Trucks North America</a> has started production of the all-new Volvo VNR at its New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia. This new regional hauler is designed specifically for urban and regional routes where agility, visibility, and precision matter most.</p>
<p>“Built on a completely new platform – 90 percent new compared with the legacy model – the Volvo VNR is purpose-built for navigating congested city streets, distribution centers, and urban routes where visibility, precision, and agility are critical,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “We are excited to begin production and get these trucks into the hands of our customers.”</p>
<p>The first units rolled off the line in February 2026 and are slated for delivery to Clayton, a national single-family homebuilder. Orders for the new VNR opened six months after its March 2025 unveiling.</p>
<h2><strong>Made in the U.S., Supported by Skilled Workforce</strong></h2>
<p>The New River Valley Plant, where all North American Volvo trucks are assembled, is the company’s largest manufacturing site worldwide. Voorhoeve emphasized Volvo’s commitment to U.S. manufacturing, noting, “Volvo has built trucks for the U.S. and Canadian markets in Virginia for more than 40 years. The expansion supports the company’s growth plans in North America and its long-standing commitment to U.S. manufacturing and a skilled workforce.”</p>
<p>Volvo recently invested $400 million in upgrades at the plant, including a new 350,000-square-foot facility for cab welding and improved paint and material flow systems.</p>
<h3><strong>Fuel Efficiency and Safety Upgrades</strong></h3>
<p>The new Volvo VNR offers up to 7.5 percent better fuel economy than the previous model, thanks to improved aerodynamics, advanced powertrain features, and idle-shutdown systems. Volvo says this increase helps lower operating costs while supporting sustainability goals in regional and local delivery applications.</p>
<p>“The new Volvo VNR incorporates a comprehensive Volvo safety package, with advanced onboard technologies designed to support operation in dense urban traffic and pedestrian-heavy environments,” Volvo stated. “The truck offers better forward visibility than the previous model, enabled by a sloped hood design and a larger panoramic windshield. It also incorporates industry-first safety innovations, including integrated side curtain airbags, making it the safest regional truck ever produced by Volvo Trucks North America.”</p>
<h4><strong>Optimized for Urban and Regional Routes</strong></h4>
<p>The VNR’s tighter turning radius makes it ideal for city streets, distribution centers, and other confined areas. Its features include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Up to 7.5 percent improved fuel efficiency</li>
<li>Volvo Active Safety Platform with Volvo Active Driver Assist Plus</li>
<li>Camera Monitor System for enhanced visibility, including infrared tech for low-light conditions and digital reference lines for trailer positioning</li>
<li>Multiple axle options, including Adaptive Loading, Electronically Controlled Suspension, and Global Rear Air Suspension</li>
<li>Class 8 configurations: 4×2, 6×2, and 6×4 tractors, plus straight trucks with multiple body types</li>
<li>Two trim levels: Core for practical durability, Edge for enhanced comfort and premium in-cab features</li>
<li>24-volt electrical architecture supporting advanced safety and connectivity</li>
<li>Engine options: VGT engines from 405-455 HP with 1450-1850 lb-ft of torque, plus D13 Turbo Compound engines with waste heat recovery and two additional low-NOx ratings</li>
</ul>
<p>“The start of production of the Volvo VNR follows the launch of Volvo Trucks’ all-new long-haul Volvo VNL,” Volvo said. “Together, the VNL and VNR reflect the company’s focus on application-specific trucks designed to improve efficiency, safety, and uptime across a range of fleet operations.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After a sluggish stretch through spring and summer, the used truck market finally showed signs of life in August. New data from <a href="https://www.actresearch.net/">ACT Research’s</a> <em>State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks</em> shows that same-dealer sales of used Class 8 trucks climbed for the first time in five months.</p>
<p>The rebound was stronger than analysts anticipated.</p>
<p>“The 11% m/m gain was better than expected on a seasonally adjusted basis,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT. “August is typically the second-best sales month of the year, running more than 8% above average. The auction market turned in a respectable performance that was counter to its expected decline. Auction volumes floated 3.4% higher m/m in August. The wholesale channel saw its largest sequential gain since February 2024 in August, adding 35% m/m. Combined, total market same dealer sales volumes climbed 11% m/m in August.”</p>
<p>Those increases across wholesale, retail, and auction channels hint that fleet buyers and dealers may finally be shaking off months of hesitation tied to freight demand, rates, and economic uncertainty.</p>
<p>Tam added that the timing aligns with historic trends, even if the broader economy feels unpredictable right now.</p>
<p>“Even though summer does not officially end until late September, used truck sales typically exit the summer (and spring) doldrums in August,” he said. “Clearly, August did not disappoint this year, at least from a unit volume perspective. Industry participants should interpret this as a positive sign, especially in light of all the noise in the economy and commercial vehicle market these days.”</p>
<p>For dealers, carriers, and independent buyers, the August bump could be a welcome shift heading into the fourth quarter, especially after months of sliding volumes and flat pricing. Whether this momentum holds will depend on freight conditions, interest rates, and inventory availability heading into fall and winter.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mack Trucks is entering a new era of driver safety with a proprietary system designed to provide truckers with increased awareness and peace of mind on the road. The new tech suite, called Mack Protect, makes its debut with the launch of the all-new Mack Pioneer Class 8 highway truck.</p>
<p>This shift marks a move away from the Bendix Fusion system previously used in Mack’s Class 8 lineup. Mack Protect was built in-house to meet the unique needs of Mack drivers and offers new layers of protection — both in terms of crash mitigation and helping prevent incidents before they happen.</p>
<p>Instead of a one-size-fits-all setup, Mack Protect comes in three versions so fleets and drivers can choose what fits best for their needs:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Mack Protect (Standard)</strong> includes core forward-facing tools: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, forward collision alerts, traffic stop-and-go support, frontal airbags, forward pedestrian detection, and road sign recognition.</li>
<li><strong>Mack Protect Pro</strong> adds more side protection, including side curtain airbags, lane change alerts, blind spot monitoring on both sides, and pedestrian detection along the sides of the truck.</li>
<li><strong>Mack Protect Premier</strong> takes it a step further with active steering and lane-keeping assist layered on top of the Pro package.</li>
</ul>
<p>On top of all this, Mack says the system brings in some brand-new technologies never before offered on their trucks. That includes:</p>
<ul>
<li>Driver Awareness Support with a heads-up display</li>
<li>Radar systems for both the driver and passenger sides</li>
<li>Automatic warnings for forward and side pedestrian detection</li>
<li>Lane-keeping assistance through active steering</li>
</ul>
<p>Scott Sokach, senior safety product manager at Mack Trucks, explained that the new system was built with everyday driving challenges in mind.</p>
<p>“The driver awareness features we’ve developed respond directly to the challenges professional drivers face every day,” Sokach said. “Our system is designed not just to respond to emergencies, but to help prevent them from occurring in the first place by extending the driver&#8217;s awareness of their surroundings.”</p>
<p>With safety demands evolving quickly in the trucking world — especially on long highway hauls — Mack is clearly putting a stronger focus on helping drivers feel more in control behind the wheel. And with the new Pioneer leading the way, the company seems committed to keeping both drivers and those around them safer mile after mile.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>PACCAR Leasing Company (PacLease) is marking a major milestone this month—45 years of delivering full-service leasing and rental solutions for Kenworth and Peterbilt customers.</p>
<p>Launched in 1980, PacLease began as a way for dealerships to offer more to buyers seeking flexible transportation options. “It enabled these dealerships to better serve their customers – many of which were looking into full-service leasing as a product offering for these specific buyers,” according to a release issued Monday. “That has culminated into nearly 41,000 PACCAR vehicles being in lease or rental service worldwide through PacLease.”</p>
<p>Ken Roemer, President of PACCAR Leasing, reflected on the company’s founding. “In 1980, PacLease was established during a pivotal moment in the trucking industry marked by deregulation, offering customers greater flexibility and control over how they managed their transportation needs,” he said. “It made a lot of sense for our dealerships to join the PacLease network — we started with 17 franchises located across the United States and Canada. While fleets could lease PACCAR products from other full-service leasing companies, we felt a direct connection with Kenworth and Peterbilt dealerships – who could custom-spec a truck for their customer’s exact requirements – would be a differentiator in the marketplace. And, looking back, it certainly has been.”</p>
<p>That momentum has only accelerated over the decades. “And, it hasn’t stopped,” Roemer added. “Today, we’re continuing to touch customers in the U.S., Canada, as well as in Mexico, Australia and Europe. It’s been exciting to see the growth.”</p>
<h2><strong>A Network That Keeps Fleets Moving</strong></h2>
<p>Today, PacLease supports its global fleet through 665 service locations—540 of them in the U.S. and Canada. That reach plays a critical role in keeping trucks on the road.</p>
<p>“Providing service virtually everywhere has been a key to our sustained growth,” Roemer said. “Our franchises, while independently owned, know the key to great customer service is to treat each customer as if it were their own. If there ever is a problem on the road, a PacLease location is there to offer full support to keep the truck moving.”</p>
<h3><strong>Expanding to Meet Today’s Needs</strong></h3>
<p>PacLease has continued to evolve alongside the trucking industry. In 2024, the company launched an online Franchise Portal, giving its franchise network access to real-time fleet reports and prognostic information—tools designed to improve uptime and efficiency.</p>
<p>The company also offers contract and managed maintenance programs, helping fleets that run both leased and owned vehicles. “That’s been especially attractive for fleets that have a combination of leased and owned vehicles,” Roemer said. “Trucks continue to evolve in technology, making them more challenging to service for those with their own shops. As a result, more fleets are relying on PacLease to provide that support – saving them time, money, and downtime.”</p>
<h3><strong>Built on Quality and People</strong></h3>
<p>As PacLease celebrates 45 years, Roemer credits its long-term success to the strength of PACCAR products and the people behind them. “Premium Kenworth, Peterbilt, and DAF trucks are the hallmark of PACCAR. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mack Trucks has just introduced the highly anticipated Pioneer model, replacing the Anthem as the company’s top on-highway truck after eight successful years. The debut event took place in Brooklyn, New York, just a short distance from Mack’s original home, and it signals a major shift in Mack’s approach to the Class 8 segment.</p>
<p>Fernando Couceiro, Mack’s Vice President and Product Owner for Highway Trucks, explained that while the Anthem had been popular in daycab fleets since its launch in 2017, it didn&#8217;t quite hit the mark in the sleeper market. With the Pioneer, Mack aims to win back ground in the long-haul segment, where it currently holds a smaller 2% share.</p>
<p>Jonathan Randall, President of Mack Trucks North America, addressed the audience at the reveal, emphasizing the need for Mack to surpass competitors: “To take share from our competitors, we have to be better than them.” He stressed the importance of pushing boundaries with the Pioneer to remain competitive in the marketplace.</p>
<p>Lukas Yates, Mack’s Expert Chief Designer, shared that the truck&#8217;s design was built around three core principles: performance, comfort, and aerodynamics. The Pioneer promises to deliver impressive efficiency without compromising the rugged, iconic look that Mack is known for.</p>
<p>The Pioneer’s arrival is the culmination of an eight-year development journey, supported by a buzz-generating social media campaign leading up to the event. Teasers such as the cryptic “monster Mack” video and Blair Witch-style clues had truck enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the truck&#8217;s reveal.</p>
<p>In a nod to Mack’s 125th anniversary, Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt compared the excitement surrounding the Pioneer’s debut to the 2017 Anthem launch, calling it “almost like Christmas Day” for the brand.</p>
<p>As the new flagship model, the Pioneer takes the spotlight, though the Anthem will remain available. Mack Trucks President Stephen Roy confirmed, “We are so revved up and ready to show you the next generation of Anthem… but not today.”</p>
<h2><strong>Aerodynamics and Performance at the Forefront</strong></h2>
<p>One of the Pioneer&#8217;s standout features is its improved aerodynamics, which help the truck achieve greater fuel efficiency. The truck’s design eliminates the iconic bulldog ornament from the hood, integrating it into the grille to reduce drag. The grille is reinforced with a durable, lightweight metal mesh, which adds strength and reduces weight.</p>
<p>The truck also features new headlamps with a defrost system to prevent ice buildup, a smart and functional design change.</p>
<p>Mack&#8217;s emphasis on aerodynamics extends to the cab, where the design team balanced airflow optimization with maintaining the company’s signature rugged look. “It had to pass the B.A. test,” said Couceiro. “Does it look badass?” Lukas Yates pointed out the challenge of combining aerodynamics with toughness, calling it “really difficult to make an aero shape look tough.”</p>
<p>Thanks to these aerodynamic updates, a redesigned MP13 engine, and an upgraded transmission, the Pioneer delivers up to 11% better fuel efficiency than its predecessor, with a 4% improvement directly attributed to the new engine.</p>
<p>The Pioneer also introduces a digital mirror system, replacing traditional side mirrors with cameras mounted on top of the sleeper. This innovation boosts fuel efficiency by about 1% and offers better visibility by eliminating blind spots.</p>
<h3><strong>Driver-Centered Comfort and Interior Design</strong></h3>
<p>The Pioneer’s interior is equally impressive. It was completely redesigned based on feedback from professional drivers. Mack conducted a clinic at Virginia Tech, where 40 drivers provided input on the truck’s ergonomics, ensuring the truck’s cabin is as driver-friendly as possible.</p>
<p>Vince Lokers, Chief Designer of the Pioneer’s interior, reflected on the design process: “An all new body-in-white is really a dream come true for a designer.” The result is a truck that’s comfortable and practical for drivers.</p>
<p>The Pioneer offers a premium seating system, featuring wider, taller frames, heated and cooled seats, and even a built-in massage function. The cab itself has been redesigned with 3.5 inches more width and an additional inch of headroom, making it easier for drivers to get in and out safely.</p>
<p>Other driver-friendly features include a push-button start, a steering column-mounted transmission stalk for better ergonomics, and a flat-bottom steering wheel for easier access. There’s also wireless charging, a customizable switch layout, and a parking cooler that allows the truck’s batteries to keep the cabin cool without idling.</p>
<h3><strong>Safety and Technology Features</strong></h3>
<p>The Pioneer comes equipped with several cutting-edge safety features, including frontal airbags and Mack Protect, which integrates advanced driver assistance systems. Inspired by the construction industry, a new cab entry step design provides better grip and reduces snow and ice buildup in winter conditions.</p>
<p>On the tech side, the Pioneer is the most connected Mack truck to date. It features remote diagnostics, over-the-air software updates, and the MyMack app, which allows drivers to monitor truck status and control key functions remotely. The truck also includes dual inductive charging stations for both the driver’s position and the bunk area.</p>
<p>The infotainment system has been updated with a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch secondary screen for easy control of all features. For those who need to mount devices for navigation or compliance, the Pioneer offers a new ELD mounting plate and a dedicated tablet holder.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mack Trucks has kicked off its 125th anniversary with exciting developments for its customers. Jonathan Randall, President of Mack Trucks North America, recently described this significant milestone as &#8220;a monster year for Mack,&#8221; signaling a strong start for the company. But rather than just celebrating, Mack is giving back with new advancements to its connectivity platform.</p>
<p>The latest updates include automatic software updates through its over-the-air (OTA) update platform and a self-service feature allowing fleets to modify truck parameters directly through Mack Connect.</p>
<h2><strong>Simplifying Updates with AutoSend </strong></h2>
<p>Nicole Portello, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer for Mack Trucks, likened the new AutoSend update feature to how smartphones handle system updates. AutoSend notifies fleets and drivers via the in-cab Driver-Display Activation when an OTA update becomes available. From there, fleets have up to 28 days to decide when to install the update.</p>
<p>Best of all, AutoSend ensures updates can be performed whenever the truck is parked, without requiring any intervention from drivers, fleet managers, or Mack’s customer care team. &#8220;It gives a lot of control and a lot of power back to the fleets,&#8221; said Portello, noting that trucks running the latest software experience 22% less unplanned downtime.</p>
<p>Since its launch, Mack’s telematics gateway—standard on all Mack trucks with Mack engines over the past 10 years—has been installed in 200,000 of its Class 8 trucks. Of those, 73,000 trucks are currently subscribed to Mack’s Integrated Uptime bundle, and over 24,000 remote updates have been completed.</p>
<p>Starting in the coming weeks, AutoSend will be a standard feature for customers with trucks equipped with Driver-Display Activation, a digital dashboard interface allowing drivers to review and install updates directly. This feature is available on most Mack-powered trucks built after November 30, 2020, and customers can choose to opt out if desired. According to Portello, fewer than 100 current subscribers have elected to opt out of the program so far.</p>
<h3><strong>Self-Serve Vehicle Parameters by Mid-Year </strong></h3>
<p>By mid-year, Mack will further streamline operations for its customers with the introduction of self-serve parameter changes through Mack Connect. This new capability will enable motor carriers to independently adjust settings like road speed limits and idle shutdown parameters, as well as create profiles specific to each truck.</p>
<p>Previously, making these types of adjustments required help from Mack’s Uptime Center or a trip to a dealership. Now, fleets can manage these changes themselves, directly within the Mack Connect portal.</p>
<p>As Mack Trucks celebrates 125 years of innovation and leadership, it continues to push boundaries in connectivity and fleet efficiency—proving that it’s not just a giant in history, but also in the future of trucking.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="https://nacfe.org/">North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE)</a> has revealed exciting plans for their next Run on Less event, titled Run on Less – Messy Middle. The 2025 event will spotlight heavy-duty Class 8 trucks—both sleepers and day cabs—operating in long-haul, return-to-base, and over-the-road duty cycles.</p>
<h2><strong>Targeting Freight&#8217;s Largest-Impact Segment </strong></h2>
<p>Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, NACFE has explained their decision to focus this Run on what they call the &#8220;messy middle.&#8221;</p>
<p>“We chose to focus this Run on the messy middle and specifically on long-haul, return-to-base, and over-the-road duty cycles because it is the largest emitting market segment and there is confusion surrounding it,” said Mike Roeth, NACFE&#8217;s executive director.</p>
<p>Set to take place in September, the event will highlight four distinct powertrain options—diesel, natural gas, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cells. Each powertrain type will be represented by three trucks from different fleets, offering valuable real-world data to help better understand the long-haul segment.</p>
<p>“By having trucks with a variety of powertrains, we will be able to capture real-world data and bring some clarity to the long-haul portion of the messy middle,” Roeth noted.</p>
<p>NACFE is actively working with fleets to select an accurate mix of participants to reflect current industry trends. The organization has announced that details about the selected fleets will be shared this spring, followed by on-site visits to each of the 12 fleet locations.</p>
<h3><strong>Leveraging Data to Drive Insights </strong></h3>
<p>For this Run, like previous ones, each participating truck will be equipped with Geotab telematics devices. Geotab, NACFE’s official data partner for Run on Less – Messy Middle, will enable the event to collect and analyze critical data.</p>
<p>The Run on Less website will also play a central role, featuring updated fleet profiles, video stories, and a dashboard tracking various metrics. Additionally, information and results from the prior four Runs will still be accessible through the site, allowing for comprehensive knowledge sharing.</p>
<h4><strong>Educational Bootcamp Series Kicks Off in February </strong></h4>
<p>Complementing the September event is a 13-session Bootcamp series, set to begin on Wednesday, February 11, at 1 p.m. EST, with sessions continuing every other week. The Bootcamp is designed to educate and engage industry professionals across various fuel technologies, including diesel, natural gas, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.</p>
<p>Three sessions will specifically cover each powertrain type, followed by dedicated recap workshops. A concluding session will address additional fuel-efficiency technologies critical to the messy middle.</p>
<p>Rachel Ellenberger, NACFE’s industry engagement manager, expressed her enthusiasm for the Bootcamp program, saying, “The NACFE team has been hard at work over the last few months putting together stellar programming for the Run on Less – Messy Middle Bootcamp, and I’m excited to unveil it to our audience.”</p>
<p>She added, “This year’s Bootcamp will include the educational sessions we all know and love along with workshops designed to be more conversational and encourage further audience participation. The agenda is set, and we’re excited to continue to recruit engaging speakers who are talented storytellers in their corner of the industry. I’m looking forward to seeing you in February!”</p>
<p>Participants can register for the Bootcamp today, with ACT News, published by TRC Companies, assisting NACFE in coordinating the program mechanics.</p>
