John DunneA truck driver from Wheatfield, Indiana has been honored as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association. John Dunne, a 24-year-old driver for ABF Freight, sprang into action after witnessing a car crash on I-294 in Rosemont, Illinois. Not only did he stop to assist the woman trapped inside her vehicle, but he also managed to save her dog.

The incident occurred on August 8, 2023, around 11 a.m. Dunne noticed a cloud of dust ahead and papers scattering in the air. Realizing there was a wreck, he swiftly positioned his truck to shield the damaged car from oncoming traffic. Without hesitation, he rushed to the aid of the victim.

“The car was sideways on the road,” the trucker and volunteer firefighter said. “I knew she was pinned in the car—the steering wheel was up against her chest.”

As emergency vehicles arrived on the scene to assist the crash victim, Dunne stayed put with his truck, shielding everyone involved from the danger of oncoming traffic. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to free the woman from the wreckage, during which Dunne provided support and assistance.

“It’s just how I feel—it’s just what I do,” he said. “You’re in a wreck, I help you.”
