Joshua MulfordJoshua Mulford, a truck driver from Springport, IN, has been recognized as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA)for stopping to assist victims at a high-speed car crash that occurred right in front of him. Mulford is a dedicated driver for Hirschbach Motor Lines based in Dubuque, IA.

It all happened on March 14, 2023, at around 8 p.m. in Polkton, NC. Mulford, accompanied by his trainee Wesley Hirst, was cruising along State Road 77 when they were suddenly passed by a vehicle traveling at speed of over 100 mph, according to Mulford’s estimate.

“All at once there was a loud bang, fire erupted from the car, we saw the guy tumbling across the road — the passenger,” Mulford said.

When Hirst noticed the crash, he immediately pulled the truck over to the side of the road. The driver of the crashed car was able to get out of the vehicle and seemed to have only minor injuries. The passenger, however, had suffered severe burns and appeared to have broken bones. The passenger was thrown out of the car during the crash and landed on the concrete guard rail in front of Mulford’s truck. Mulford’s initial priority was to put out the fire in the car.

“The car was too far gone by the time I got the fire extinguisher,” he said.

In a selfless act of kindness, He quickly distributed all the bottled water from his truck to the other witnesses who had stopped to assist the injured passenger. He then began to direct traffic around the accident which he continued to do after the arrival of emergency personnel, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to helping others.

“It’s in my nature — I try to help everybody I can when I can,” Mulford said.
