In a proactive move against rising cargo theft incidents, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is calling on motor carriers and freight brokers to engage in a vital data collection effort. Industry experts have noted a troubling trend where cargo theft has evolved from isolated incidents to more complex schemes, including impersonators targeting vulnerable shipments. Recent findings presented by the ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee highlighted FBI data suggesting that cargo theft could lead to annual losses estimated between $15 billion and $30 billion. This alarming statistic has propelled the committee to place a strong emphasis on examining this pressing issue.
While the threat of cargo theft grows, many professionals within the sector remain hesitant to disclose sensitive data in a public forum. The ATRI’s upcoming survey is designed to ensure that loss data is collected in a confidential and anonymous manner while simultaneously spotlighting effective countermeasures that motor carriers and freight brokers are employing.
“Cargo theft is a pervasive issue that won’t go away without a collaborative effort,” asserted Ben Banks, Vice President of TCW. “With accurate cargo theft data, our industry will be able to quantify the issue and work more effectively with law enforcement and commercial insurance to combat this costly problem.”
All motor carriers and brokers are strongly encouraged to lend their voices to this survey. Please click the link here to share your insights and contribute to this essential initiative.
