Bridge construction projects on the East Coast may cause significant traffic delays for commuters traveling across the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge over the Potomac River and several Interstate 95 bridges in Providence, Rhode Island.
Theodore Roosevelt Bridge Project Overview
The Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, which connects Arlington, Virginia, to Washington, D.C., supports nearly 95,000 vehicles daily, amounting to over 32 million travelers annually. Significant upgrades, including deck replacement, structural repairs, and additional improvements, are planned for this bridge, originally built in 1964. The most recent repairs to the structure were completed in 2022.
According to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), lane reductions and potential closures will occur throughout the project, with increased congestion anticipated on Interstate 66 and other nearby roadways. Commuters are encouraged to consider alternate routes to ease traffic.
DDOT will provide regular updates on detour routes and other project-related impacts. Additional details about the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge project can be accessed online.
Interstate 95 Bridge Improvements
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has announced plans to rehabilitate 15 bridges along Interstate 95 between Providence and Warwick. These bridges have been assessed as being in poor or fair-to-poor condition.
The first phase of the project begins on May 16 with traffic shifts on the Broad Street and Eddy Street bridges, both of which are rated as structurally deficient and will be replaced. During construction:
- All traffic on the Broad Street Bridge will move to the northbound side.
- A portion of the Eddy Street Bridge will close, and southbound traffic will follow a detour, which will remain throughout the project.
Completion of the Eddy Street Bridge replacement is projected for 2028. A detailed detour map for this phase is available online.
Plan Ahead to Avoid Delays
Drivers in these areas should anticipate disruptions and adjust their travel plans accordingly. Stay informed by checking official updates from the DDOT and RIDOT online to stay ahead of changes in traffic patterns.
