A hero on the highway! Lance Kent, a Greensboro-based truck driver for Murrows Transfer Inc., was recently named by The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) as a Highway Angel – an award recognizing his act of bravery in stopping to assist another trucker whose vehicle had become engulfed in flames. His selfless action is certainly commendable and exemplifies what it truly means to be an angel on the road.

Kent was driving through Virginia’s beautiful Rocky Gap on February 24, 2023. Reportedly making the journey around 7 p.m., he experienced an unexpected sight near this rural mountain town.

“I could see smoke from a distance,” Kent said, as he drove closer to what ended up being a truck on fire.

As he arrived at the fiery scene, he stopped to see if he could help, not knowing what he would find. The flames were so intense the entire truck was destroyed. The driver lost everything but was fortunately able to exit the vehicle and escape the flames.

“My biggest fear was that someone was trapped in there,” Kent said. “He blew a rear tire — it sparked— and caught fire.”

Kent was able to get the driver wrapped in a blanket from his own truck since he’d only been able to escape with the clothes on his back.

“That could’ve been me,” Kent said. “I just want to be helpful.” He stayed with the driver until emergency personnel arrived.
