1. Get out and look. Getting out to look at your surroundings is more helpful than you think, especially in a new environment!
2. Use technology to study the setting. Use a map app on your phone to check your surroundings at a larger scale. You’ll be able to see further than what you can immediately see with your eyes.
3. Check your surroundings. When you arrive make sure to stay alert for anything around you. There could be pedestrians or even other smaller cars coming from all directions around you!
4. Look for the tread marks. If someone has already parked where you are looking, there might be tread marks they left behind. This can be a good stencil for you to get started backing in.
5. Don’t be afraid to reset. Start again. Better to start again than to fix a hard situation. Take your time to avoid having to reset so many times.
6. Know when to say no. If it’s too hard to handle, do not force it and risk damage.

Here are some things you can do to prepare yourself.

Visualizing – Picture yourself being in any potential situation that you could be in. You could be confronted by someone, involved in an accident, encountering wild animals, etc. Also visualize your potential solutions. Things you can use in your surroundings.

It’s important to visualize encounters that you have never been in as well. Visualization creates a familiarity within your brain that will allow you to make decisions at a quicker a rate.

– Stay hydrated! If you can, get a thermal bottle. A water bottle that will keep your water cold is the best in times the heat really gets to you! It wouldn’t hurt to also have extra water bottles in case you run out or want to share.

– Protect yourself from the sun. You don’t have to be in direct sunlight to need protection. The sun can feel amazing through the front window, but it can be dangerous to your skin in excess.

– Get a sunshade! These will make you so much happier when you leave an air-conditioned room to get in your truck. It won’t keep it completely cool, but at least you won’t be sitting in excruciating heat.

– Check your truck. Your truck is more vulnerable in hotter weather so it is important to check on it a bit more. Make sure to check your breaks as well as all your liquids and tires to prevent tire blowouts due to heat.

– Check the weather! Of course you already did! Check again! Many cities, as you’ve probably experienced, aren’t consistent throughout the day. Some cities will make you feel like you went through all seasons in one day.

• Trauma Kit – An assembled kit is about $50 or you can get the items and assemble for under $50. As a truck driver spending so much time on the road you can be the first one at a wreck and a regular first-aid kit won’t be helpful for the potential situations you might be in.
• Fire Extinguisher – much like the trauma kit, you’ll never know the situations you’ll run into or even potentially go through yourself. Many commercial vehicles already have extinguishers, but we sometimes forget to check the expiration date. Make sure you’ve got a good one!
• Flashlight – This seems like a no brainer but we want to give you some tips on the right on to get! We recommend an LED flashlight that is at least 120 lumens. A rechargeable flashlight is also more efficient in the long run! Flashlights can be helpful for obvious reasons, or to get peoples attention from afar.
• Seatbelt cutter/glass breaker – With the possibilities of running into car wrecks, these are essential tools that can help in emergencies. If you become trapped in your truck or others, this will be a helpful tool to keep accessible in your truck. You can find a seatbelt cutter that is also a glass breaker
• Pepper spray – there are so many ways you can protect yourself on the road but this is one of the easiest ways to do so. Make sure to spray with a range of at least 10 – 12 ft. Different states have different laws as to what size to carry is legal, so please keep that in mind.

Ingredients

• 2 boneless chicken breasts
• ½ jar peach preserves
• ½ jar of red salsa

Instructions

• Cook chicken in slow cooker for 3 hours on high covered
• After 3 hours drain liquids from cooker
• Mix peach preserves and salsa
• Pour mixture and cook for 30 minutes on high covered

Spaghetti and Meatballs

Ingredients

• 1 chopped onion
• 16 oz. packaged/cooked meatballs
• 26 oz. jar spaghetti sauce
• 15 oz. drained canned diced tomatoes
• 1 and 1/3 cups of water
• 2 handfuls of spaghetti broken in half

Directions

• Place chopped onions in slow cooker on low; top meatballs and diced tomatoes
• Add spaghetti sauce and stir gently
• Add water and stir gently
• Cover and cook on low of 6-7 hours or on high for 3.5 hours until onions are tender
• Stir then add spaghetti; stir again to cover spaghetti
• Cover and cook on high for 25 minutes covered

Slow cooked party pork

Ingredients

• 2-3 lbs. of bone in pork shoulder
• 1 cup of grape jelly
• 1 cup of ketchup
• ¼ tsp of allspice

Directions

• Add pork to slow cooker.
• Combine jelly, ketchup and all spice and pour over pork
• Cook on low for 8-12 hours covered
